what type of dog should i get? there is a 12 year old in my house, and i want a small dog, and so does she.?
These are my choices:
papillon
cairn terrier
pom
Jack Russel
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels
Beagles
Japanese Chin
Miniature Dachshund
shih tzu
bichon frise
Biewer
Chacy Ranior
Coton De Tulear
teacup chiwawa
teacup yorkie
teacup poodles
teacup maltese
Coton De Tulear
Dandie Dinmont Terrier
Havanese
Kyi-Leo
Miniature Fox Terrier
Russian Toy Terrier
Mountain Feist
Norfolk Terrier
Cross all the 'teacup' dogs off your lists. There's no such thing, they're all undersized and sickly dogs. Smaller dogs don't do as well with kids. And a lot of the dogs you mentioned aren't common dog breeds. Beagles are absolutely wonderful with kids. I've heard a lot of good things about cairns too. But why go with specific dog breeds? Take a look at your local animal shelter. I bet they have a small dog there that is great with kids.

Why couldn't you get a regular Chihuahua, Toy Poodle, Maltese, or Yorkie? Some of the other breeds you listed are bigger than them anyway… no reason to buy an unhealthy, inbred runt.

Although certain breeds do have certain desired characteristics, each dog is individual. Since you have a child in the home you want to make sure to get the perfect dog for your situation.
Why don't you go to a local shelter or rescue to find a small dog?…many beautiful dogs are there that can be great with children. Please adopt…hope all goes well. Dogs are great for kids to have.
Hope this helped

My vote is Dachshund. Look for the long hair dachshund too. they're adorable.

I have a papillon and he absolutly loves kids. We've only had him for about 3 months and he's already potty trained and behaves well aroung everyone. They rarely bark unless a strasnger approaches, but they only have to smell them and they'll stop. I have five kids in my family (including myself) ranging from 15-5. Our dog absolutely loves my little sister Molly, she's 12 too.
I've also had a shih tzu in the past and they are also great small dogs.
Hope that helped!

Beagles seem like the best. They are usually a bit more calm, and they usually don't bite or bark as much as some small dogs. Beagles can become a bit large, though.

Here's my advice:
No one is going to really be able to help you, without know YOU or the 12 y/o. Go around look at shelters or breeders, whichever you prefer to go to(I'm SO not into the whole it every dog alive thing so there's no more dogs on the earth thing that people are SO into… sorry done ranting.) And watch the dogs play and what not, any good breeder will let you come visit the dogs! Research EVERYTHING about them. Diseases that are in the breed, how much care and how long they live(ask yourself are you willing to take the dog to the groomer or comb it that much for 10-15 years, however long the lif EXPECTANCY is?) How much excersise does it need? Etc etc. Hope this helps.

This is no way to find a good breed for you and your child. Pick a few of the breeds you think you might like and find out about each by going to the national club's website. Your list includes dogs with vastly different temperments, needs, behaviours, health concerns, etc. Talk to breeders of some of them, a dog show is a great place to meet breeders, and make sure you find the right breed for your lifestyle. Then find a responsible breeder or two to find your pup. Go to the home of that breeder, get a reference, make sure you are not buying a mill or BYB dog. Paying more for a well bred dog up front will save you thousands in vet bills, worry and sadness because many poorly bred dogs come with lots of health problems. Buying over the internet, from a pet store or a broker (someone who insists on bringing the dog to you) is a bad choice. A good breeder will also require you neuter the dog, will ask you lots of questions, give a long term health guarantee and keep in touch for advice as long as you feel a need. Finally find out about possible health problems in your breed and ask what screenings have been done on the parents. This is a must and some breeds have very few problems while others can have many. You are making a committment that could last 16 to 18 years. Spend the time and effort to make it a positive one. Good luck.

Also, Any "teacup" dogs are poorly bred, sickly little runts that are sold for waaaay too much than they're worth, and will cost his or her owner more money in the future because of their poor breeding. Anyone who breeds "teacup" dogs are backyard breeders or puppy mills and should be steered clear of.
