I have a 9 week old 1 pound imperial shih tzu. She will not eat and is lethargic. My vet wants to charge me 350.00 plus 125.00 per day for fluid therapy because she could be dehydrating. I have a friend who has ringer solution and syringes. Does anyone know if this will work and how much I should give her?
this is why we warn people about teacup dogs.
please dont do it yourself. here's a thought, pay the TRAINED person to do it! your dog needs serious medical attention, not some uneducated person administering meds and attempting procedures on her in your kitchen. Your poor dog…

You go to your vet for these sorts of things….not your randomly syringe carrying crackpot friend.

There is no such thing as an "Imperial" Shih Tzu or "teacup" anything, unless you're talking about they're selling at the Royal Doulton store. What you have is an undersized, overpriced, sickly runt. Responsible breeders NEVER EVER bred undersized dogs, only puppy mills and backyard breeders do. When a undersized pup from a RESPONSIBLE breeder is born, it is sold on a spay/neuter contract.

If you do not have the means (financially) to care for a dog, why in the world did you purchase one?
Please do not try to give fluid therapy on your own, you are not a veterinarian, you have no clue what could happen.
Go to the vet, pay the cost, or give the dog to someone who will properly care for it.

Poor thing. It’s probably horribly inbred in order to get the “teacup” size….You should not do it yourself. Take the dog to a vet.

NO, please have the vet deal with it. I know you probably trust your friend, but there are many things that could go wrong and she may not know what she's doing.
It could be especially harmful since you have a 'teacup' dog. Are you aware that teacups are simply the results of breeding runts of the litter together?
That is why this dog is so sickly. It didn't have strong parents. 'Teacup' is just a term slapped on the dog to make it more appealing to buyers despite it's bad genetics.
I hope you can afford to take care of this dog. It's very likely it will have many health issues in the future. =(

You should take the dog back to the breeder– he ripped you off and totally scammed you.. THere is NO such thing as Imperial shih tzus– I found out the hard way, I bought a shih tzu who's dad was Imperial… My dog only lived for a year!!! Please look at these links– http://shihtzu.org/Info/imperial.asp?menu=Info

PLEASE make a formal complaint against the breeder…. This is the ONLY way to stop back yard breeding, and stop people from breeding and selling sick puppies!!! I am totally heart broken over my shih tzu….. I don't want anyone else to go through what I did!!!

Back to the breeder is where that dog should go. Please read the articals on Imperial Shih tzu They are a scam and not something people should buy!! Most of the time health issue and VERY short life spans 1 year or less

Well, I paid my vet the same amount. Luckly, took only two days for me. My puppy start to eat.
If you puppy does not eat or drink, don't force anything in. Pay the vet, let them do the job.
