I recently fell in love with this breed.
I do not plan of getting a "teacup" since they are fragile, and I have a shih tzu who likes to play.
Also this would be a good dog to get since my house is small and I live in a desert.
I know with my shih tzu there is certain types of food wich is toxic to it, is this the same with chihuahuas?
What kind of special care is intended for chihuahuas?
I am going to do more rescerch but I thought I could ask yahoo first :]
Thanks!
xx
I've met several chihuahuas and they were all rather aggressive except a few… But I do what Cesar Millan tells me to, and so the aggressive ones I met where only the owner's faults(the Dog Whisperer, you should watch it) If you have a balanced chihuahua that you walk every day, they should be sweet and loyal. this mayn't help much, but if you walk your dog every day they are better behaved. :~}

they do barrell rolls lots of them

We breed chihuahuas and they are very easy to take care of. They can eat just about and food. We feed ours Pedigree for small breeds and Eukanuba small breeds.

i don't know anything about dog, but why don't you call the animal adoption center or where you're going to buy your dog and ask. They're happy to answer your questions.

Here's a great website to start your research. I have two myself, and love them.

a chi will do fine in a small house they dont take up much room LOL! any food that is toxic to your shih tzus will be toxic to a chi. the only special care I know is when they are puppies make sure it eats because its sugar levels can drop also becareful with it jumping off furniture as it could break a bone.

You ahve to be VERY CAREFUL with them. They aren't the kind of dog that you can roughhouse with.

Chis don't require any more special care than any other dog. They do require lots of attention, but I'm sure you're use to that with a shih tzu. They should get along great. You should get Chihuahuas for Dummies — great tutorial on chis.

A dog is a dog. If it's poisonous for one breed, it's poisonous for every breed. There's no such thing as a teacup chi. They range is weight from 2 – 6 lbs. I have four of them and they are the most wonderful little entertainers, thinking they're much bigger than they are.

I have a 2 pound chi, and I just keep her on a hard dog food, plus I give her a sugar supplement so she doesn't get low blood sugar, but I have had no problems with her she's the best dog I ever had, I also have two small children that are very good with her. Other than her normal allergies, she's perfect.

I got this info from the dog whisperer(the TV show)
They can be fragile, especially as there is so much bad breeding going on.
But congratulations for planning ahead
Never choose a dog on looks or breed. Find the BEST MATCH for your situation and lifestyle.
Each dog's needs and personality is different.
Go to http://www.petfinder.com and talk to rescues and shelters. Discuss your lifestyle, needs and work with an adoption counselor to find the best MATCH for your household.
There are Chihuahua Rescue groups that can offer advice and they have great dogs and can find the perfect playmate for your dog, as can other rescues.
NEVER buy a dog from the pet store, or classifieds, or websites. Those are the puppy mill puppies. Big trouble!
You need to find the right individual dog.
See http://www.stoppuppymills.org
Also remember that caring for an additional dog can be expensive- food, medical treatment. Make sure your budget allows it.
