My Shihtzu shows pink around his paws, what can I do?

My Shihtzu is constantly licking his paws. They are now pink. Is it a food allergy? Any remedies?

My Maltese had the same problem. I had too feed him plain foods ie boiled chicken & rice & a good quality dry feed. Also keep hair cut around his pads & tell him no when he licks them. Now if he gets into wrong feeds he starts again but as long as we keep to vets suggested diet all is well. Some dogs get it from an allergy to grasses as well. Never feed milk or any human processed foods as they are a real trigger for most.

It is possibly a food allergy. What are you feeding your dog?

Also, I would take the dog to be checked over by a vet.

It is more then likely an allergic reaction to something causing ant the feet itch. If a food allergy I would expect some sort of rash on other parts of its body. If it is just the feet it may be the grass or where ever it walks. If it is the hair that is pink/red it is because of the licking. The dogs saliva will turn the hair color to pink/red. I had the same problem with my pit. I took her to the vet. for her yearly check up and the vet. told she was licking her feet because the hair was red. She explained that the saliva will turn the hair red. It turned out to be the Bermuda grass I had in the back yard. Once I riped all the grass out of the yard the problem went away. Now I have to replant my yard with with grass again or cover it with concrete, which will keep the dogs nails worn off. I hate clipping nails.

The red staining is due to his saliva.
It is likely due to an allergy, but to what, only the vet can say. Dogs can be allergic to an ingredient in their food, fleas, a chemical/pesticide on the grass, any chemical you have used in your house, as well as a million other things.

There is also a chance it can be an obsessive behavior, due to boredom or stress.

Bring him to the vet so they can diagnose what is causing him to do this, that is the only way you can fix it.
