Is my 9 month year old shihtzu allright?

Everyday, for about three days now, he starts choking for about 1 minute. This happens once daily now. We think its a cough and give him medicine, but it does not seem to be going away. The cough sounds like he is choking but lasts a lot longer, and right after a minute passes of this, he acts as if nothing has happened.
F.Y.I. He does not wear a collar. He isn't sick or anything. And it sounds a lot worse than reverse sneezing.

I have 4 shihtzu and they all do what is called "reverse sneezing". It sounds like they are choking to death and gives you a good scare. But it is usually harmless and most dogs with short faces do this. It is like they are trying to get air and sounds like they are choking, but it usually passes in a minute or so and they are fine. Sometimes it can be from an allergy or just dust up their nose. Unless they seem limp or dazed afterword, I wouldn't worry too much.

Yes, it could be the collar. Dogs grow rather fast as puppies to adults and it could be time for a new one. If it's not the collar, then, I'm not really sure. You should wait for some other answers then, or, just to be safe, go see a vet.

You should take him checked out by your vet. Has he been in a kennel or with other dogs recently? I would definitely have him checked out.

I have a small breed god too - a Pomeranian. He has a cough similar to what you describe. Our vet diagnosed him as having a "collapsing trachea" - it's apparently common in small/toy breeds. There are treatments for it - usually starting with Puppy Valium. We havent gone that route, as I dont want to do anything to alter his personality. It doesnt seem to bother him too much. It is usually triggered if he gets really excited (like when we come home from being gone) - or if he stretches his neck upward in play. You can check with your vet…
Good luck!
