What are some good and bad qualities about Shih Tzus?
I am considering buying one in March. I love the breed but have never owned one. I have always had large breed dogs. I am trying to be a responsible owner.
Good- Super intelligent (one of mine is excellent obedience… I trained her to off leash level in two weeks flat), non-shedding, small, beautiful, soft, cuddly, playful, don't need tons of exercise, don't eat much, generally healthy, come in different colors, great with most everybody.
They do great in pairs, being very playful dogs, and will provide you hours of entertainment. They are athletic enough to enjoy long spring and fall hikes, but sedentary enough to stay at home all day and not go on a single walk outside of the yard/home. They are small enough to be paper or litter trained, if you so desire, or are disabled, and cannot walk them in bad weather.
Bad- Lots of grooming, either you do it, or the groomer does, no other way! They can have sensetive tummies, their buggy eyes can be prone to damage, and their short noses can lead to respitory problems, or overheating, their long backs occasionally might be prone to back injury. They can be spazzy and yappy! And they will train you when you try to train them, sneaky buggers.
They are occasionally prone to being shy, and one persony -this is because of their high intelligence -if you baby them at all, you could have problems -they see babying as you telling them that the world is to fear, and you are their only protector. Even carrying them in public or sweet talking them when they are scared can be babying to them. Best have strangers feed them treats and pet them, don't hold your dog to meet strangers.
I LOVE these dogs, I have three of them, and I can honestly say, they are one of the best breeds out there. I plan to breed and show proffessionally one day.
Might I add, that, regardless of whatever people here will tell you - is that their name is pronounced sheet-zoo. They were the chinese foo dog… not the chinese poo dog.

They are asian
References :
bad quality, they're ugly
good quality, they're small enough to step on by "accident"

good qualities- they don't shed. their adorable. they can always tell when your upset.
bad qualities- reallyyy loud bark.
i have a shih tzu and have for 10 years.
i love him <3

well, they don't shed which is really good because you don't have to clean up hair, but they can also be really fiesty with children. They tend to cling on to one person and are very protective (that can be bad or good.) But all in all they make really great pets and can be a great companion!

My problem with a Shih Tzu: It won't shut the hell up when I come home from work, and I'm trying to sleep. He just sits there barking… and barking… and barking.
Positive Quality: Smart dog, you can see this in their inventive ways of playing.
Negative Quality: They seem to have problems with the eyes. Make sure to check their eyes regularly, so they don't have a build up of debris. If you have one of these dogs, knowing how to properly flush the eyes is a good skill to have.

One of the good qualities is that it is fun to say the name of the breed in front of easily offended people (or on T.V.)

They are great dogs all around - I had mine for 14 yrs. before she passed. Very easy to train (potty train, fetch, etc.) however SNORES…they have very smashed faces/noses and can have breathing problems. Also they have very bulged eyes (that's why their hair grows the way it does - to naturally protect their eyes) so you need to make sure you clean them daily of 'goop'. My dog was also great w/my kids.

Oh I have shih tzu and I LOVE LOVE LOVE him.
Positives:
1) they are very loyal and lovable
2) they do not need very much exercise so if you do not have the time to walk them a lot thats okay they enjoy sleeping.
3) They have the reputation to my "ankle biters who yip and bark a lot" but mine and other people i know who have them don't. Only of course when a stranger or someone comes home.
4) they don't eat a ton so buying food is cheaper than other dogs
Negatives:
1) Grooming can be expensive we cut our dog about every three weeks.
2) They have really goopy eyes but you can keep them clean if you pay attention.
3) They aren't the smartest dog so if you want one that shakes, and lays down, and all that stuff don't count on it.
Hope that helps a little

I call her THAT LITTLE SHIT!! not SUSIE!! ANYWAY… hope u have alot of time to put into training this dog..and watch out for inbreeding!!!
good qualities= They are playful, friendly, loving, loyal, full of charactar, small but not fragile, adaptable and good with kids.
What to be aware of= heavy grooming commitment, can be difficult to house train and prone to eye injurys.

I had a Shih Tzu X yorkie and he was the best dog ever. So intelligent and loyal. Just to warn you that apparently small breeds like Shih Tszu's and yorkies are known to have a problem with their trachea. Our dog died after a year because his trachea collapsed. we were told that the vet should have spotted that it was flat. after he died we were told by a lot of people that it's common. so if you do get one make sure you take it the vet to be checked.
Overall you should definitely get one. they are so loving.
