There's nothing wrong with switching your dog's food regimen if you feel he isn't doing well on his current food regimen.
I would continually monitor your dog and see if further switches might be necessary throughout his life.

Yes I would definitely switch foods. These type dogs tend to have a skin problem anyway but it would be a start to try the food. If this doesn't seem to be helping try different foods to find something they are happy with and start bathing them regularly with a moisturizing shampoo. If you are already bathing them regularly or having it done somewhere make absolutely certain what is being used because this could be the problem not the food. With the type of fur they have if the shampoo isn't being rinsed completely this could cause the problem. Also if a grooming shop is bathing your dogs they may be using a flea and tick dip which could be drying their skin, that is something to check also.

There is no problem with switching your dog food. I switched my shih-tzu off of IAMS to Beneful. My puppy will now eat whenever she wants and she doesn't have Diaria anymore

Food has a lot to do with the well being of your dog. DO NOT feed any grocery store brands or Wal mart brands. That includes Pedigree, PUrina, Beneful, Iams, etc. They are full of by-products, fillers, etc. Pure garbage.

Go to this link and try to feed your dog a high rated foor (5 or 6)
