when grooming a shih tzu how do you clean its butt area?
Isn't there a way to pop the poop out or something like that, I know it sounds gross but I've seen it done I just can't remember how to do it? Anyone know or have any good ideas on how to keep it clean between grooming visits?? Thanks!
DID YOU HEAR ME I ONLY TAKE HER TO THE GROOMERS ONCE EVERY 2 WEEKS DUDE, SHE'S NOT THAT DIRTY. SHE IS AN INSIDE DOG AND I WANT TO KEEP HER END CLEAN WHILE IN THE HOUSE. SO IF YOU DON'T HAVE ANY IDEAS DON'T ANSWER.THANKS!

My only suggestion would be keep the hair on her bottom short and after she has a bm wipe her bottom with a baby wipe.

You need a decent pair of electric clippers. Hold her tail in one hand and CAREFULLY cut away at the hair. You may want to use a pair of scissors to cut away any feces which has become stuck in the hair (or wash it in a bath). This is what we did with our long coat Chis. Just cut a small circle. If your not showing her you can also trim her "pants" the hair that hangs down behind her legs.

If it gets sticky, hair conditioner will bust it up, so it can be combed out. but, if just a smear or discoloration now and then, Pampers Baby Wipes work great.

You want to make maintenance easier since she has long hair, and the poop is getting stuck to it on its way out, or you want to know how to do the anal gland purging (which your groomer does)?

If it's the former, keep the hair around the anus as short as possible. If it's not so much an aesthetic thing to you, trim off as much as you can (and as you like). Might also want to check what you're feeding her; solid poop shouldn't adhere so much to doggy hair. I have a bichon (and she's all white with long hair….blah), and sometimes a lil poop will hang on her butt becuz she's 'saving' it to drop it somewhere else. Then the whole thing comes out cleanly. In the rare instance a lil poop is stuck on her, I use a wide-toothed comb to get out as much as possible, then use baby wipes or doggy wipes (they do make those). o_O Try and get the doggy wipes, if you can; they're formulated so it won't harm your dog when it licks itself.

If you mean the anal gland cleaning, I highly suggest you leave that for your groomer to do. You already take her every 2 weeks, which is more than sufficient, and she isn't exhibiting any symptoms from irritation (like scooting her butt against the floor). This stuff is NASTY. It'll send you running for the hills. It'll also hurt your dog a lot more if you don't know what you're doing (regardless, it'll hurt the dog, so you really gotta know what you're doing).

You have to hold the tail high and up over its back to make the anus 'pucker'. Just below, you can feel two small sacs, the anal glands, about the size of small peas. With a clean tissue in hand, you want to expel the stuff accumulated in there by squeezing them (up and out is the best way I can describe it). You wanna do this with a tissue in hand, cuz that stuff can come out with a lot of force…and god, does it STINK. Not something you want all over your fingers/hand.

It's not as easy as it sounds. You can squeeze and squeeze, and nothing come out, but your dog is not gonna appreciate it at all, and will turn around and try and snap at you. Again, let your groomer do it.

Ask the groomer to teach you how to take care of the problem, I heard of people washing with puppy wipes that are sort of like baby wipes, or you can trim around the bottom of the pooch. Ask the vet if your feeding it the right food.

You are talking about cleaning the anal glands I am assuming;-) Your groomer will do that when you take her, you really don't have to worry about doing it in between grooming appointments unless your dog is having a problem.

To learn how to do it you can have the groomer or vet show you because it has to be done a certain way and it is something you have to be shown how to do..

Go to any pet catalog (drs fostersmith, others) and get a pair of oster clippers with a #10 blade. They'll last forever and you can keep the area around her bottom short. Do not use a #5 blade; the ends are too long and might catch her rectal area. Ask your groomer to show you how to do this. It's a worthwhile investment! Good luck.
