We have a Shih Tzu X Lhasa Apso who is around 7 now and no trouble at all – however we just adopted an 8 month old Shih Tzu X Pekanise and she has worked out how to open all our rubbish bins around the house – the kitchen one has a slide lid – she quickly learned how to open this but today I came home from work to find half the contents of the bin all over the kitchen and the bin lid completely removed – she is also taking on our older dog like she is competing for the position of top dog this only started tonight – any suggestions? We have had her for a week now.
I have 3 german shepherds and this is a problem for me. But for a shih tsu it should be NO problem.
You have a few choices:
1) put the bins under kitchen cabinets with child proof locks on teh cabinet doors.
2) get TALLER BINS – ones that are waist high that a shih tzu can't possibly reach
3) get ones with lids that LOCK
4) face the lids towards the wall. makes it awkward for you, but the dog can't get to the lid to open it
5) put trash bins OUTSIDE, or behind a BABY GATE, or someplace else completely inaccessible.
Never ever leave trash in an open bin in a house with pets. Always have some kind of locking lid or place them where the dogs can't reach them. For some dogs, this is way too much of a treat for them to avoid, no matter how much you scold them. The temptation is too strong, even when they know they shouldn't do it.
Make sure she is spayed and crate train her. A crate is so much cheaper than her tearing everything up.

discipline is key. but if you dont want to scare her, put your garbage in a cabinet. or invest in some safety hardware. you know the kind you use to keep babies and toddlers out of things. that should work. the dominance thing between the dogs is normal, and they will have to work it out themselves, as long as they arent really hurting each other.

you have to show the two dogs you are the leader of the pack..to stop the fighting ..and try some hot hot pepper on the bins after a few times it will stop ..and a dog crate will help you train the new dog better so that you are always around to stop the negative actions and its not free to run when your gone

They make a snappy trap that is pet safe like a mouse trap but with a big flapper on it so it does not hurt the dog.
Place it in the bin or on the bin and let her correct herself. When she goes to get into the trash she will set off the trap.
I use regualr mouse traps but I have lagre dogs and now I no longer even have to set the trap just lay it on the bin and they will not toucj it. If you sahke a trap and they hear it rattle they will leave the room and go lay down.
Other than that crate the dog when you are gone. It will keep her from getting into things she should not and your house will be safe.
As for the older dog they are going to compete for the top dog position in your home. Many times the female is really the alpha dog as they control when the breeding goes on. It will take more than a week for her to settle in maybe as long a a month or more.
When you are gone you may want to seperate them if you think they are going to fight just so no one gets hurt.
