Where can we find a legitimate shih tzu breeder?
We are looking to buy/adopt a shih tzu puppy in the very near future, and we'd like to weigh all of our options-like breeders and pet rescue organizations. Our last dog was a stray we took in, loved her and trained her, so we've never had to go through a breeder or an organization. Is there a way to find listings for legitimate breeders? I've heard so many horror stories about puppy mills, and I would never like to contribute to that type of business. What is better, the paper? The internet? Where do we start?

To start, I would go to a local dog show. The shih tzus being shown are high quality dogs that only come from reputable breeders. They are very nice, and a dog show is a great place to create a friendship with a legitimate breeder!

http://www.petfinder.com – look for a Shih Tzu rescue, because there are always Shih Tzus that need loving homes.

Do not buy from a pet store, and in general do not buy from a website that advertises puppies on the internet.

If you're looking for a reputable breeder, get a referral through the American Shih Tzu Club at http://www.shihtzu.org/ (under "Shih Tzu Information" in the top blue bar).

But with thousands of Shih Tzus out there needing homes, please consider rescue first.

Go to http://www.akc.org and look up ,upcoming dog shows in your area'
Go to a show and after wards talk to shih tzu owners/ handlers
    Ask for breeder referells
Once you have found a breeder, ask them lots of ?'s, see if they offer health gurantees (a good breeder will offer 2+ yrs) and did health testings before breeding .

Go to the American Shih tzu site and look for a club in your area. They will have a list of local breeders and most likely a rescue group as well. Thank you for doing the right thing.

Dog shows! Get to know the breed and the people that show them. You will meet all kinds of people and show people always know who has a litter or will be breeding soon. That is how we found our dog.

use a search engine to find a breed club for the breed. If they are recognized by the AKC, you should be able to find a rescue organization on the AKC web site
