My 2yr old shih tzu was neutered and is acting lethargic and not eating. Is this normal? when will it pass?

I adopted my shih tzu on the 6/28 and he was just neutered on 6/27. Not knowing this the day i got him we went around to family and friends and he seemed to be normal. Since i've had him home he hasn't ate or had water. He moves slowly and appears to have a cold similar to a common cold. I'm worried he isn't going to improve. I plan on calling the pet rescue today and see what they say, but i was curious if anyone else had suggestions or advice or could relate to his behavior. I'm a first time dog owner so i'm not sure if i should panic or expect for him to get better and ride the storm out.

heh, my dog is a maltese cross shi tzu and i remember the day we got him neutered. this is normal. he probably had it late in the evening/at night and seeming he is walking around (though slowly) he should be fine soon.
i would set him up with a big comfy pillow (with a sheet if he is still drooling, lol). make sure he has water close by for when he is ready for it. if you have access to a plastic seringe (without the needle bit of course, just the sterile plastic case bit. for example, i can get my hands on them easily as i have a relative who is a nurse) then you can try putting water in his mouth. he might not let/want you to, don't force him. just make sure he either spits it out or swallows so he doesn't choke (depending on how lethargic he is).

he should be right as rain by tomorrow. if you are concerned then call the vet/PR, for sure. it might be a good idea just in case.

He will come back around to normal soon enough. When we had our old cat neutered he would just sit and stare and act all depressed.

After that he was always very tempermental, but it was funny.

Don't worry he is just in the recovery / post-surgery depression period. :-)

If he's not eating or drinking and is lethargic then you need to get him to the vet for sure! None of that is a good sign. He may be feeling blah because of his surgery but dogs usually recover pretty quickly and since it's already been a few days and he's still acting this way then I would definitely get him to the vet.

You have a toy breed dog there. If they don't eat or drink they become dehydrated and get low sugar. The dog needs to see a vet today.

i would give it a few days, after sergery some pets get depressed both my cats did. but i wouldn't let this go on too long, if he doesn't get better within the next few days then you need to call you local vet and have him checked out. we don't want him to die on starvation, you need to i wouldn't say force but you need to get him to drink some, i had to do that with my very own dog. i had to place water on my hand and she finally lick it off me, if not their kedneys will shut down. so don't let this go on too long.

Yes it is tue that pets are lethargic after surgery, but if after the surgery he seemed fine and now hes not doing well get him to the vet. He could have gotten an infection from the surgery or cought something from the place he was neutered. Its not uncommon for healthy pets to come home sick from recues because the pets there tend to be sick. Take him to the vet.

After having many foster pups, this is normal. Some dogs react differently to the meds and surgery. I had some who lethargic for days and some that were up and about right away. Just monitor him and try to get him to eat and drink as much as possible. As for the cold, talk to the vet and rescue about kennel cough. You may need to get him on an antibiotic if he isnt on one already.
