Any breed is good for some people, you must match up your lifestyle, finances and exercise needs with a dog. Long coated dogs need frequent grooming plus professional grooming so you must have enough money to pay for that as well as vet bills, food, etc. A good rescue will match the dog to the people, not just adopt them the closest dog. Plus a rescue has the dogs in real homes so knows their likes and dislikes and the cost is reasonable. Usually for $200-$300 you get a dog who is neutered, UTD, on heartworm and flea preventative and often microchipped. A reputable breeder sells their pet quality pups for up to $1,000 and the dog has shots and possibly a chip but not neutered which will cost another $150-$300 depending on the dog's sex and size.Petfinder.org has many dogs needing a good home.

It doesn't matter where you get them, but rescued pets tend to have had hard lives, and will take longer to warm up to you. If you want an instant companion, get your pup from the breeder, even if it costs a little more.

The breed of the dog is unrelevant. it is how you raise the animal. Generally shih tzus are lap dogs and are well tempered. however, raised in the wrong way.

Shih Tzu's are nice dogs. They will need to be groomer every 8 to 10 weeks and brushed every other day if you keep them long.
As far as where to get one,I would like to see you rescue one.You will pay less, most of the time the animal has been vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and tested for temperament already.Good luck with your new friend.
Shish Tzu's do not shed a lot. They do shed, but most people don't notice it until they brush them.

They are aw some dogs. They are very happy and love to play. They are a little hyper but with you being young I don't see that as being a problem.

I think a Shih Tzu would be a great pet for you especially if you have been around them alot. I would go for a breeder or rescue (or your local SPCA) I got my dog from a shelter and she was SO friendly and great. I think she was abused before, but she is so loving and a forgiving dog. In fact, she a therapy dog that goes to visit senior homes and hopefully hospitals soon. I love shelter dogs because they always love you so much for rescuing them. Good luck and I hope this has helped you.

The pound and rescue are great places to start. You may get a dog with issues, but having rescued a few dogs, I can honestly say it's very rewarding. Talk to the staff at a rescue about how active you are to help you pick out the perfect dog for you.
If you can't find a shih tzu in the pound, a mix or any other small dog you fall in love with will do just fine. Puppies are adorable, but they're a LOT of work. I suggest getting an older dog (at least a year old) first.
Many dogs left behind by their old owners just want to be loved again, and bonding can pay off very quickly. My dog followed me around from the day I brought her home.
Good luck to you – and, of course, be a responsible dog owner! It can be a pain sometimes, but the rewards are awesome.

Well if you get them from a breeder then thety will cost a little more but I've never seen oe at the pound so a breeder might be better. They are good dogs. My grandma used to have one he was very sweet and they aren't usually aggressive. They do take a lot of grooming care, but seeing as how you are 10 I think you can handle it.
Temperament
As the sole purpose of the Shih Tzu is that of a companion and house pet, it is essential that its temperament be outgoing, happy, affectionate, friendly and trusting towards all.
General Appearance
The Shih Tzu is a sturdy, lively, alert toy dog with long flowing double coat. Befitting his noble Chinese ancestry as a highly valued, prized companion and palace pet, the Shih Tzu is proud of bearing, has a distinctively arrogant carriage with head well up and tail curved over the back. Although there has always been considerable size variation, the Shih Tzu must be compact, solid, carrying good weight and substance.
Even though a toy dog, the Shih Tzu must be subject to the same requirements of soundness and structure prescribed for all breeds, and any deviation from the ideal described in the standard should be penalized to the extent of the deviation. Structural faults common to all breeds are as undesirable in the Shih Tzu as in any other breed, regardless of whether or not such faults are specifically mentioned in the standard.
Size, Proportion, Substance
Size – Ideally, height at withers is 9 to 10½ inches; but, not less than 8 inches nor more than 11 inches. Ideally, weight of mature dogs, 9 to 16 pounds
That is just a little bit of information I got from akc.org. I hope you like your new puppy. I have a lot of experience with dogs so if you have any questions, a problem arises, or you just need some one to talk to for fun about dogs then email me at animal_vet_2_be@yahoo.com

Shih Tzu are normally better around older people. You would do better to get a Jack Russell terrier.it's small and active and great with kids.Shih Tzu are very expensive to keep groomed.since Jack Russell's are a short haired breed then it's less up keep.

i think a shih tzu would be good. My friend has 2. One is bigger more hyper , and bites often. The other is not as big isn't hyper and doesn't bite. But i still love 'em. so yeah. they are good. i would recommend the pound.

I would choose a shelter animal! there are so many homeless nice animals out there! there is a serious overpopulation of pets!
Plus, may i suggest (or remind you?) that a puppy is a lot work! i would suggest a nice grown all ready potty trained animal!
