Yesterday i saw an adorable shih-po puppy for sale.My mother and father let me play with him, a big mistake. He was perfect, he was hyper at first but then he calmed down.I fell in love with him rite away.At home i have a 12 year old shih-tzu, he is very relaxed and usually has his own schedule, sleep, eat, then walk, then sleep somemore. Would a little hyper puppy anoy him that muhc that he coul.d go into a deep depression.Could the new puppy be the death of him?i want hims o bad but then i wnat Champ(my other dog) to be happy also. Champ isnt that friendly towards other dogs, maybe a few of them but not many.Any body have advice on these questions? The pet shop allows older dogs to visit the puppies to make sure they react well but champ isnt that into trips so he might not be abnle to take the car ride. Any advice? please help!!
I would never get a dog from a pet store, the pups come from puppy mills where their parents have puppies EVERY heat cycle until they die a terrible death, they live in wire cages which they never leave and never get human contact.
As far as getting another dog, If your current dog is not good with other dogs, then its not a good idea to get a new hyper puppy. Let Champ live out his life, if later you decide you want a new pup then go for it, but make sure you go to a licensed breeder or a shelter.

ummm if anything, puppys make older dogs happier and more lively, not depressed, so if your parents say yes, then i'd go for it, but dont buy it if its from a pet store

Advice: Don't support a pet store. That cute little puppy came from a puppymill, where his mom and dad still are, living in tiny cages just churning out puppies till they die. His breeders produced him like he was a sort of crop, with no regard to health or wellbeing. A pet store is the absolute WORST place to get a dog from.
If Champ doesn't like other dogs, then I don't think getting a hyper puppy is a good choice for him. He probably won't be around too much longer, so after he's gone, get a puppy from a rescue or reputable breeder.

Wow, that would be tuff. Would you at 70 years old want to be bothered with an infant that constantly bothered you? On the other hand, a younger dog usually makes the older one revisit it's youth. I would try to have your present dog visit with the pup to see if they do interact. Good luck to you.

It's different with all dogs, I wouldn't get the other dog if your worried about Champ. The hyper dog might be annoying at first, but Champ might get used to it. It just depends..you should try to take Champ up to the other puppy to see how they react bofore spending money for a dog that Champ will hate.

Owner of 7 dogs.
Please do not get that puppy. Pet store puppies come from horrible puppy mills. Dogs are crammed into small, wire cages and forced to churn out litter after litter. They get little human contact, and have to live in their own waste. The puppies are ripped away from mom and litter mates too young. They don't care about the dogs they produce. They only care about money.
I understand just how tempting it is to get a pet store puppy. I know about puppy mills, but went into a pet store yesterday just to see what puppies they had. The puppies were SO cute and I would've loved to take one of them home with me, but I just had to leave them there because of the place they come from.
If you get that puppy, another will quickly replace it and you'll just help keep the puppy mill cycle going. That isn't something that should be supported. If you love dogs, the best thing you can do to help end cruel puppy mills is to leave that little Shih-Tzu/Poodle mix there.
Elderly dogs don't do well with hyper, nippy puppies. They're just too rambunctious. I would suggest you not get a puppy when you still have Champ. Since Champ is older, he'll appreciate the peace and quiet without a puppy running around and bothering him. Let him live out the rest of his days in peace.

i have a 10 year old golden retriever and we bought a new pup for her to play with and now she is livelier than ever. the puppy will not kill champ, he/she will actually extend his life, provided he doesnt eat him/her. just kidding. i would also recommend not buying a male dog, as he and champ could have territorial issues.
dont buy from a pet shop, also. try your local shelter or an spca center, or petfinder.com

why dont you go and visit the new puppy but bring a life sized doll or the shih-po puppy you know like a stuffed animal around that size and get the puppies sent on it and bring it home to Champ (cute name by the way) let Champ sniff and do whatever he wants with the toy then try to bring Champ to the pet store its ok if he dosnt hope it all works out and you have two dogs soon
