getting a mature shih tzu dog?
Hi all,
I'm considering of getting a 4 year old male shih tzu from a breeder. He was a show dog who has won many titles and is time for his retirement. On your opinions do you think it is a good idea to get a dog at this age? Or would it be better to start with a puppy so that it can have a stronger bond with you in the future?
Thanks guys, I appreaciate any opinions!
We recently adopted a 4 yo female shih tzu so I would recommend adopting one at that age definately! That age is still fairly young and you will still have a lot of years together with them because shih tzus can live up to 15 yo.
Our dog has had no problems bonding with us. One advantages to adopting an older dog vs. a puppy is that they are usually already housetrained. A puppy also requires ALOT of attention so if you don't have the time to devote to training a puppy, an older dog is recommended.

I think it would be good because the dog is still young and playful at this age.

Honestly, as a dog proffessional myself, I always tell clients to adopt older dogs. They make great pets especially if from a shelter. Its common that people dont want older dogs; they all go for the puppies and young dogs! We find that here at the shelter, more of the older dogs end up not finding homes. 4 isnt old at all, so go for it. You will bond no matter what. Dogs live for the moment. They will act like they've been your best friend for years.
Just make sure he's neutered or youll be sure to send him back for marking in your house!

Shih-Tzus are a fairly long-lived breed.
Regardless of what he's won, if he needs a home and you're prepared to love him, then I say go for it.
If you're a first time dog owner, it's probably even better for you, rather than the baptism of fire a young pup can be! None of that ghastly potty training :p
Personally, I like slightly more mature dogs anyway - puppies can be a big handful and I find them a bit irritating anyway. Maybe because I'm so impatient.
I have a Shih-Tzu and she is literally my best friend. They are lovely, addictive, lively dogs - she's still going strong at 11 years old and you wouldn't know she wasn't 11 months old.
He's ready trained, so as long as the owner lets you know the commands she uses with him, he should be able to slot into life with you without a problem.
Good luck.

Adult dogs can bond with you and love you as much as any puppy.
Get to know this dog. Meet him, and see if you make a connection. He sounds gorgeous. And if the breeder is responsible, he is probably a sound, healthy dog.
It's up to you, but I think it sounds like a good idea if he's a good match for you.

I don't see anything wrong with getting a dog at this age. Everyone that I know that has adopted a dog that was no longer a puppy have gotten along fine and bonded really well. There are pros to getting an adult dog like not having to worry about house training them not to pee in the house, and they may behave better like not chewing on things as bad having those puppy yrs behind them, and may not be as hyper. Believe me 4 is young for a Shih tzu! When I was growing up my parents got me one and she is still going strong at 17 yrs. old. although she can't see well and is deaf now. She is very feeble. I will say though that Shih tzu's can be fiesty and tempermental at times. In my opinion they should be watched around children b/c they can be snappy. Overall though I think that these are good dogs. Being a show dog I imagine he would be well trained and obedient.
