Why would anyone want to rescue a dog?-Any dog? Well I suppose you need to delve a little deeper and ask the question - why does any dog need rescuing? Many people think of rescue dogs as being “damaged goods”. An example of this thought is children not eating bananas with the black bits on their skins. The bananas are fine but try telling this to children.

Some people may feel that a rescue dog is a second rate dog, one that nobody wants anymore. Well there are many reasons why a dog may need rescuing and may need help from a thoughtful and caring person/family. Many rescue dogs may have strayed and may not have collars/microchips, maybe some of the original dog owners cannot afford to keep their loved ones anymore (i.e. pensioners with over the top, mounting bills or owners who have lost their jobs or their place of residence). Some dog owners cannot deal with their dogs anymore after they realize the ‘full grown size’. They started out as cute little puppies, and then ended up huge Rotttweilers, German Shepherds or even massive Huskies. These larger breeds need constant challenges and exercise-which some dog owners simply cannot provide. This could be due to time or disability. So, not all Rescue dogs are second rate cross-breeds or mongrels. Rescue Centers and Shelters go a long way to make sure each rescued dog is healthy, well fed, and up to date with their shots, as well as helping each dog to be as socially well adjusted as can be, before they are ready to be adopted out by new Dog Owners and/or Families.

So what I am trying to say, is that before you go out and look for a New born
Puppy from a ‘puppy mill or pet store’, perhaps you could give your local Rescue Centers/Shelters a go. You would be saving a dog’s life and you could be making your life fulfilled at the same time.

As for Rescue dogs being out of control and needing extra Dog Training once they are taken home, well I can say that I have had both rescue dogs and new Puppies- fresh from their litters, and the only difference would have to be the Dollar figure I paid for them. Sure some dogs may need more training than others, and some Rescue Dogs may need more comforting but this is more to do with each individual dog’s temperament and its previous circumstance.

I am a self confessed dog lover-you should know that by now, and if I can help rescue any dog, given the opportunity, I would not hesitate.
Take care.

Is there anywhere I can get the publications above without printing them out on my own computer?
I'm REALLY interested in the Shih Tzu…and having one…ever since students bro't theirs to visit me at the high school where I taught in Montana…(I've met scads since!…It's always been a joy to have their owners tell me how wonderful they are!)
Please do drop me a line and give me the scoop on the publications!

Dear Rebecca,
Though I have lost my little angel of 16 1/2 years…I still am enjoying receiving your emails. She was the love of my life and I miss her so. It has been almost a year and I still find myself crying over her. So, in response to the comment I just read, I will definitely agree that shih-tzu's are the most awesome dogs anyone could ever own. If I was able, I would very much love to bring another shih-tzu into my life and be extremely happy that I did so. The fact of the matter is, I live alone and no one but myself to care for a new rescued puppy/dog. My hours/work schedule has become longer than it previously had been for many years that I had my sweet girl, though it was something she grew accustomed to, and as she was in her much older years, I always felt she never really cared as long as she had me to sleep next to during the night. However, I just don't feel it would be fair to adopt another dog when I am gone 8-10 hours (sometimes more) out of the day. Any input on this type of situation? As I find myself constantly dwelling on this type of situation for a dog. I would LOVE to own another shi-tzu to break that void I currently have in my life. I have felt nothing but emptiness inside since January when I had to send my little girl over the rainbow bridge, in hopes that some day we will be together again.

Rebecca,
Keep up the interesting blogs, just wanted you to know that we are on our second rescue SHIH-TZU, and there is nothing like it. Once you get over the fact that someone could ABUSE one of these precious little folks, they pay you back in ways that can't be described. If I wasn't working full time and my husband out as an OTR truck driver, we would done more. Hopefully when we retire we can "join the cause" so less of our little fiends will have to suffer. If there is anyone who has second thoughts, please contact me, will try to quell your fears.
Blessings,
Nancy

I am the proud owner of two beautiful shih tzus, Charley(male) who will be 4 Dec 23, and Edye(female) who will be 3 Jan.26. I started out meeting a shih tzu at where I work named Mallory, and I fell in love with her, I later got Sasha a 5 yr old female and my sister got Mallory when they decided she was too much trouble at work. My sister still has Mallory and she is the queen of the house, but I had to send my Sasha on to heaven Sept 23, 2004. I later got Charley and then Edye, and they are the joy of my life. Now my sister and I through our sister-in-law who works for the humane society rescues little shih tzus, I just found a home for a little guy named Pepe…….its a joy to watch people when they get their baby, those dogs are the best….Steve

We have had our shih-tzu for about 14yrs now. Mugz the oldest just celebrated his 14th year with us,except for hard to hear,he is still eating his regular kibble and loves his special treat. He does not like to go to the groomer for a hair cut, but we are working on that with our vet. our other little guy is going to be 12 this November and he knows he is top dog. Runs around after all the chickens and ducks every chance he gets.

We would love to rescue a dog. TLC is what it is all about here on our farm. We are retired and all the children are gone so it is us and the animals. Very peaceful…

My Shihtzu is a rescue dog and he thinks he's a pitbull. When a vet says he should be put down thats pretty bad. But he is a loving dog with just my husband and I. Only when he sees other people he gets crazy. Growls and runs after them so if we have company we keep him contained. We cannot take him anywhere where there are crowds. Oh well we love him and we will keep him. Also he has to be sedated when he is being groomed or he will bite the groomer. BAD DOG He sure is a cutie though. I think he must have been abused. We got him at one year old. Do you think he should be on Prozac?

Dear Elaine,
I read your blog and just wanted to send you a note. My male Shi Tzu Sonny has been my companion for 12 1/2 years now, he remains healthy, yet I know someday I will be without him. He has been through every life path that I experienced in the past 12 yeatrs both good and bad. I can not even think of not having him in my life. So I want you to know how I feel for you. The breed is awesome. Such a wonderful friend he is to me. Thank you for writing.

OMG, my sweetpea jr, is the best shih tzu ever, he is the funniest companion I have every had. Picky, sneaky, and spoiled, all Black with a white streak down the front of his head. White patch on chest, white patch the size of a penny on his pack, and white on the very tip of his tail. His favorite thing to do is to walk to the park at 6 am, and chase after his soft football, for at least 15 min. I am in love with the breed. I am looking for a white female , if anyone know were I could find one for a reasonable price. let me know. thanks and to all the shih tzu owners, we know they are all spoiled. LOL jb
