My Shih Tzu is in heat and a Maltese got her. What to do?

I have a Shih Tzu and we were keeping her away from our male Maltese. She was just a few days from finishing her heat cycle and my son came into the house quickly and left the door open. In 2 minutes she went out to where the Maltese was and they mated. Nothing I could do. What will I do with the pups? My dogs are pure bred. Mom is 8 pounds and dad 4 pounds. Any suggestions?

Spay her. Problem solved.

Get mom some prenatal care, then find homes for some cute puppies. Then get your dogs fixed, for their health.

I have a suggestion. You can take her to the Vet and have her spayed. By removing the uterus, you will be automatically aborting the pups. Also, you will never have to worry about this situation again, and your girl will be much healthier in the long run.

Arrange for a spaying ASAP. This way, you don’t have to worry about the health concerns and complications of her carrying a litter of pups, and you don’t have to bring unwanted puppies into the world. Even if she did take, the vet can still do this procedure without addtional health risks to the dog.

And I’d get the maltese neutered too. Even if they are purebreds, it doesn’t sound like your a breeder, so there’s no point in letting him keep his reproductive capabilities, either. Fix them both and you don’t have to worry about your dogs breeding with each other (or with the neighbors’ dogs).
