During the day my 10wk old maltese/shih-tzu plays with me and is learning to do his business outside pretty well. I crate him when Im not feeding or playing and he just knows when he comes out, the first thing he does is his business outside.
However, at night time we were keeping him in the bathroom with the crate door open and newspapers down but I was concerned that this sent a message that it is ok to pee or poo in the house. As a result I crated him in the bedroom for the last 2 nights with his crate door closed. He doesnt poo in the crate but both nights he has peed in the crate.
Now I am concerned that I will train him that it is acceptable to pee in the crate. Can anyone offer some advice on what I should do?
Rule of thumb (having raised 5 puppies at various times in my life)…
A puppy can hold their water 1 hour for every month of age PLUS AND EXTRA HOUR…so….
YOur puppy is 2.5 months old…He can only hold it for probably 3.5 hours max before he has to go…Get up in the middle of the night is you have to…it won't last for long…His bladder is not yet ready to make it through the night. Perhaps you go to bed early and get up late? I don't know…how long are you expecting him to hold it? You are NOT training him to pee in the crate but you may need to sacrifice a bit of sleep in order to achieve what you need.
GOod luck

puppies can't hold their pee all night. you should take it out at least once in the middle of the night until it gets older and has a larger bladder and learns how to control it.

Take him out more often..make sure the area you keep him in is nice and cool and ventilated well.
Little ten week old bladders are bowels are just being formed well and can not control much at all right now.
References :
Make frequent trips in and out to let him know where to go for bathroom purposes.
Crate is too big for training purposes…he's not ready to go all night without a pottie break…set your alarm and take him out. kjl

They're right, the baby is just too young to physically be able to hold it that long even though he wants to. His bladder just isn't strong enough. It would be like asking a newborn infant to stand up and walk.

remove water about 3 hours before bed time.. read the link it tells you the easiest way to train him.. he is young.. letting him on newspaper confuses him..
dont expect results too soon, 12 weeks is better to be realistic.

First of all he's a puppy.
As long as the crate isn't too big for him (meaning he will pee in it if it is) then you can work around this.
Take him out one last time before you go to bed. The other thing is maybe you sleep deep and can't or don't hear him whine when he needs to relieve himself.
Accidents don't normally happen in their haven but can and shouldn't be punished for that.
The good thing you did was start closing the door to the crate.
There are sprays out there for cleaning that will deter him doing things in his crate. He'll learn with your direction in all of this.

I have a almost one year old pug, and I agree you def need to take him out once or even twice a night. I'm not sure how you feel about him sleeping with you but keeping him close through the night was helpful because I could feel him start to wonder and I knew it was time (I was more worried about him being house broken then crate trained). Don't worry though the middle of the night pottys got further apart soon he was making it til morning. He's almost one and a male and never ever pees in the house.

No dog wants to sit in pee or poop. That is why crating works. my guess is that he just can't hold it as long as you expect him to. He is just a pup. try taking him out earlier in the morning or even during the night. .
