i have decided to adopt, wanted a dog who doesn't shed much, isn't very aggressive and loves to be held or petted (nephews are 5 6 and visit often, mostly on weekends. Will keep in the house.

I like the temperment of a maltese better but as a shih tzu is larger might be better with young children
just be certain to buy from a good breeder who knows the living situation and will provide support after you get the pup

From my experience, Maltese are wonderful dogs…very loyal, love to cuddle, from what I've seen pretty good with kids. The only bad thing is potty training them. I've never seen one yet that doesn't pee or poop where it wants to. It could totally be a coincidence as I'm sure someone out there will say "hey, my maltese doesn't have accidents". I think Shih Tzus are fun, too…if you expose them to the children, other people, and other dogs at an early age. I have one that comes to doggie daycare and plays just like a big dog. Good luck! Maltese are more family orieintated.. ShihTzu have been known to get jealous and bite little ones.
Maltese don't shed, professional hair cutting I recommend a short cut unless your putting them in a show. My dog slept in our room had her own little bed and used the puddle pads in the bathroom.I was so sad when he died last year, I have a border terrier now she is sweet but not like my little Fluffy.

Maltese. Shih Tzu's have bitten kids over jealousy. You also may want to look at those new "doodle" mutts they have like the Maltipoo. Those don't shed and are well tempered.

The breed of Maltese are fairly "shedfree" and mostly hypoallergetic and Shih Tzu's have their "pluses" too- but please consider both of the breeds health problems- that might "weed out" your decision.

Hi, first, I'm a dog groomer and I like the temperament of the Maltese better, shitzus will bite quicker, I've never been bitten by a maltese, both dogs are high maintenance dogs, lots of grooming unless you shave them down.

After getting my maltese, I don't think I will ever get another breed of dog.
She is playful, sweet, affectionate, smart, easy to train (she can sit, lay down, roll over, shake, and give high fives), loving, loyal, has a great temperment. I really couldn't ask for a better dog. I've never had a shih tzu, but for me, the maltese is ideal.
