i would love to know the most effective way to house train a 8wk old male puppy. Maltese x shih – tzu???

i have never had a dog before so this is all new to me. any house training tips would be great.

First, close off a portion of the house you are prepared to have soiled and keep the dog it in. Only go into this area to play and to feed the dog. Second, plan on spending a lot of time watching your pet for the next few weeks. Third, get your dog on a schedule for meal times, including monitoring water intake. Approx. 10 to 30 minutes after each meal, take the dog out for a walk on leash and encourage bathroom behavior. If the dog does it, praise him up and down. If not, take him back in and try 10 minutes later until he does go. Repeat this after every meal. Finally, whenever you catch the dog peeing. Pick the dog up and put him outside. Eventually the dog will remember to go outside because he will have his "spot" that will be marked with urine and he will know from your encouragement that going outside is the right thing to do and it is rewarding.

Be patient! Mistakes will happen. And remember: If it isn't fun for the dog, why would he do it? Make all training fun.

I know you may not beleive in tapping on the butt… If he potties in the house simply show him what he did you can either smack his behind not hard just enough to show that its not friendly and tell him bad boy or no in a firm non friendly voice… Trust me you wont hurt him:) Or you can put him in a cage.. Dependig on your beliefs:) Well good luck:)

I trained two dogs using the book, "Good Dogs Great Owners" by Brain Kilcommons. Lots of common sense. The key is consistency in training. I was amazed at how dog training has evolved. It is a book I still refer to for a multitude of dog issues. Worth the purchase price. I also highly recommend "puppy kindergarten" at a local school.

This is my first time owning a dog too. I just adopted a 3 year old Standard Dachshund mix who looks more like a toy dog with the Dachshund face. I named her "Ashley Gracey". I adopted my angel on January 11th, 2007.

To be quite honest, I've been trying to teach her to use the litter box. It's a lot more effective I find than teaching her to bark everytime she needs to go. My worry is what will she do when I'm not there. If I can teach Ashes to use the litter box, than she'll go in that designated area all of the time. It may smell for a little bit but just keep the litter box away from others
