I live in a 2 bedroom unit with a pretty tiny balcony! I'm not too familiar with this breed so i'm not sure whether they are suited to living in small spaces (obviously the pup would be walked daily) but would it be cruel to them! Any help or suggestions would be great. Thanks
I forgot to say that i do work full time so i probably wont be home for about 8hrs a day! would either breed be ok with this, again is this cruel? im will to buy lots of toys and stuff to keep it entertained!
Many small breeds are great with small housing. Both breeds require regular grooming and brushing. You will need to buy a crate and some chew toys,(not edible) also you will need to walk the puppy first thing in the morning and then about 15minutes after you feed it, then it can go into the crate for the day. When you come home you repeat the process. Some people put pee pee pads on the patio, but its very hard to change this behavior-very hard. The kind words and love you give when your home will be just fine.

It's not a breed, it's a mutt so you should NOT pay any more than a shelter adoption fee. Anyone selling you a "designer dog" AKA mixed breed mutt, it ripping you off. But if you adopted a small dog like that, yes, with daily walks and playtime it would be fine.

this is a mixed breed of dog created by back yard breeders and puppy mills
if you want a mixed breed dog go to petfinder.com and adopt one
dont support puppy mills

buy a full blooded maltese or a full blooded shihtzu, or adopt a mix from a rescue shelter….dont support the breeding of mutts by paying for them

Well, first off — thank you for spelling both breeds properly =)
One of my worst pet peeves is when people misspell their own breed…..
However, a Maltese/Shih Tzu cross is not an actual breed. Never buy a dog that is a cross of anything. If you want a mix, check in a shelter, or on PetFinder.
Small dogs (and some larger ones) generally do fine in apartments, as long as they get enough exersize and attention. A tired dog is a good dog : )

i'm guessing you're saying that yu live in an apart. or a condo… well, it's still okay to have a small dog like that. no big dogs allowed. it isn't cruel, since malteses and/or shih tzus dont really need that much exercise daily. of course, make sure that you do take your pup out for SHORT( dont tire your dog..) walks as like what you said. if you do this, then your dog will have enough exercise. he/she can also play inside anyway. they benefit from play, not too much rough-housing, because it is exercise, but it is fun and not so stressful. before you get your puppy, make sure that the building owner/ landlord allows dogs in the unit!!

i have a shih tzu, and she does need a big space to run around coz they're very energetic dogs… if it's a mix, i'm not sure how his behavior would be..

Little dogs do fine in apartment living, as long as they get plenty of exersize. Although, I would go with a pure Shih Tzu, because they seem to bark less. That is just my opinion, and I'm sure your neighbors would not apprciate a yappy dog. Good luck on finding you dog no matter which way you go with it!

Unless it's fairly temporary or you live on the ground floor, an apartment building isn't a great place for a dog.
Dogs bark, and can't quickly get you into trouble if you can't control them.

I know everyone else has already said not to buy designer dogs already but it's not just because they're mutts… It's because mixed breed dogs have double the problems as purebreds because they get the genes from both Breeds…
Howeveer, to answer your question, An apartment is fine for small dogs. They don't require much excersize and as long as they're able to go potty whenever needed, they should be fine.

They are small dogs they don't need that much space as long as it has its daily exercise it should be fine my brother has two maltese cross shi tzu terriers pups and they aren't that big and they don't really mind small places.

I bought a maltese/shih-tzu mix puppy about 4 weeks ago. He is now 13 weeks old. We live in an apartment and he does just fine. He doesn't bark a lot and sleeps pretty much all the time. It does take a while to housetrain them. According to the vet, it will take roughly 4 – 6 months to completely train them. He does very well, though, and sleeps through the night without needing a potty break. I would suggest crate training because it seems to work well.

If you walk it daily it should be fine. I don't think it would be cruel, as long as you leave it some toys and walk it, it should be fine!
