Just wondering if anyone has this mix in their dog? I am curious what possible health concerns I should be aware of with the two different breeds?
Right now the 12 week old puppy looks a lot like a Maltese, because he is totally white w/a little butterscotch color coming in. I can see the face of a Shih Tzu more when I look at him. He is about 4 pounds now, so how large will he get?
He seems very friendly and not timid in the least. So far, he has been like a "perfect" breed (assuming there was such a thing, of course!), but I wonder if there are things I'm in for as he gets older?
Thanks! : )
TEETH, both breeds have dental issues… over crowding or baby teeth that do not want to come out on their own… and cavities…
A maltese ranges from 4 to 7 lbs and a zu from 6 to 12 pounds… so any where in there…
Cute…. they are probably going to be great pets… I love my malteses… cuddly… on my computer desk right now as I type and my big dog sitting on my feet…LOL
Watch any small breed dog for diabetes, hypoglycemia, liver shunts, and eye troubles …. ( bacterial and fungal infections can make a dogs tear stains worse)
All of these are in a folder on my desktop.

Hon, there are thousands of mixed breed owners and there is no real telling about health issues with them except for the fact that no responsible, knowledgeable breeder would purposefully produce mixes so the odds are the parents of such dogs were not good quality nor health tested in any way. There is no telling about health, temperament or structure — it is always a crap shoot and you just get what you get. He isn't a 'breed' at all so attempting to identify him as such simply means you are somehow ashamed that he is a mixed breed. There is no one that can tell you what you are 'in for' as he gets older — mutts are neither healthier nor better tempered than dogs whose ancestors have been knowledgeably selected for good temperament and health and consistant structural qualities.

They get to be 6-12 pounds, and about 10 inches at the shoulder. This page has all the info you need, from personality to grooming. Good luck =)

I just got a Mal-Shi 3 days ago. He's 8 weeks old.
First of all, I don't consider this kind of dog a mutt. I prefer the terms 'hybrid' or 'designer dog' .. that's the terms people are using for them, because they are becoming very popular.
As for all small breeds, there are many health concerns. It's also recommended that you don't get one below 4 Ibs (full grown) because they have even more health concerns. They are very fragile dogs, and should be handled very carefully. Also, the above statement is correct, they do have problems with over-crowding teeth. The smaller the dog, the worse it can be. I read on a website that the best way to figure out how a 'hybrid' is going to act, is look at the 2 breeds seperate and know that those will be some of the characteristics it will get. You can't guess which ones those. Here are 2 websites, one for shih-tzus and one for maltese. They also tell you different health concerns.
Enjoy your new bundle of joy!
I know I am.
