Shih-tzu puppy confusion!?

I think I'm getting an Imperial Shih-tzu. I finally decided what dog to get! lol
Because my Twin Amelia said "Well, what about a dog like Nammie's?" And Coco is SO adorble! So, This is what I'm getting her

~ Water/food Bowl
~FOOD (No Duh! lol)
~CLOTHES! hehe!
~Collar/Leash
~I'm just ganna use an old brush cuz, why spend money on a brush when you already have a non-opened one that your just goign to get dog hair on anyways? lol
~Shampoo
~Id tag
And I think that's it… Right?

Don't forget a spay appointment with your vet.

And a crate and some toys and you should be good to go.

    Congratulations!

Oh, PS – Many times little dogs do better with a harness than with a collar. Just a thought.

PPS – make his first appointment for shots the day you get him so you aren't tempted to put it off. :-)

clothes are unessecary. they have a very thick, warm coat. any more heat and they could easily go through a heat stroke.
you can't use a "human brush" on shih tzus, just go buy one, they're not that expensive and they're meant to be for dogs.
don't forget toys and a bed and treats for it too.
    good luck.

You seem a bit too young to take care of a dog. But don't think that just because a shih tzu is small, cute, and fluffy that you don't need to take care of it as much as any other dog. I agree with lily, shih tzus don't need clothes, they already have a thick coat. And plus, clothes on dogs look pretty ridiculous to me unless they truly need it. And haven't you ever thought of buying things to entertain your dog with? Remember to spay your dog and take it to the vet for shots.

Please don't get an Imperial Shih tzu. Because, really, there is no such thing. An "imperial" Shih tzu is just a shih tzu that is breed from runt parents to be smaller. A regular shih tzu isn't that large to start with. "Imperial" Shih tzus are only sold by byb and puppy mills. These dogs can be sickly and have short life spans, plus the irresponsible breeders tend to charge more for them.

When you get your Shih tzu make sure that it's parents have been OFA, CERF, and BAER certified. You should also be able to meet the mother at least.

You will also need a crate. Crate training really helps with house breaking, especially with small dogs. Shih tzus have very high grooming demands, so just the brush you bought for yourself and didn't use probably won't be enough.

I think you should do a little more research on the needs of the breed before you get a dog.

    Check out http://www.shihtzu.org

There are many great articles on the breed, and you can get breeder referals from the site.

Shih tzus are great dogs, and I hope you are ready for the commitment and responsibility they take.

You might need a large metal crate to keep it in when you are not home or a baby gate to close off a room. I would get a dog brush and shih-tzus need to be sprayed with conditioner when you brush them. Also, you need to allow money for shots and dewormings. A dog bed would be nice and some toys (puppies LOVE to chew). You may need puppy pads to for him/her to go potty on. I like the ones with a puppy pad holder. If you just put the pad on the floor the puppy will tear it up. How about some hairbows? That hair is going to grow pretty fast and you either have to tie it up or cut it off. You may want to save some $$$ for the groomer too unless you plan on doing that yourself then you will need some dog clippers. I think that about covers it…

    Good luck!
