Hi,

I was out shopping the other day, when I noticed just how many shoppers were purchasing dog food from the supermarket shelves!

Is this the best way to make sure your dog is well looked after, diet and nutrition wise? I don’t think so. I just think we as a society are becoming a little too pressed for time and are giving into supermarket giants and any dog foods to feed our beloved family pets- if we happen to be supermarket shopping, then why not purchase the dog foods available in the same isles we do our family shopping?

I don’t think there are many dog foods available on the supermarket shelves that can claim to be natural and well balanced. This is why I try to provide my dogs (and I have had a few dogs over the years) with my own recipes, sometimes even using raw foods.

This is just something for you to think about before purchasing pre-packaged supermarket dog foods. Did you know that many world famous Doctors of Veterinary Medicine and many Published Dog Care Experts universally agree that any dog that eats commercial dog food as a ‘normal diet’, is at a much higher risk of dying prematurely. And by the time any symptoms are noticeable it is often too late to prevent an agonizing early and sometimes even slow death.

This is just something for you to ponder next time you are thinking about purchasing supermarket processed dog food. Any way I hope I have not depressed you too much speaking about dogs and death, but at least you know the eventual outcome can be reversed by simply watching what you feed your dog.

Take care for now.

I will be getting back to you shortly with some natural and easy to make Free Dog Food Recipes.

People table food is not recommended for dogs. The best diet is a raw diet but there are good commercial dog foods available that have no grains preservatives or fillers. You just need to do your homework to find out what is in the food, and shop at a good pet store, don’t pick the cheapest bag off the grocery shelf.
We have a happy healthy little Shitzu who is fed a grain free chicken and fish kibble, called Orijen which has 42% protein . Treats consist of freeze dried chicken or liver and a grain free dog biscuit. The Orijen Food is made here in Alberta where we live but there are other brands made in the USA which are equally as good.

The only problem I ever have is now and then one will have loose bowels. I live in Tn.and want the best for my babys. Thanks, Barbara

This is a great article and I am looking forward to recipes. I do feed my babies dry food from the pet store, but I add my own fresh rice and fresh cut up chicken with a teeny bit of broth to encourage them. I want to add veggies. Can’t wait to see the recipes. thanks!

My 5 year old Shih Tzu has so many allergies I can’t give him Chicken or Lamb. He is on an Ultra Low Allergen dry and wet mixed food from the Vets office but it doesn’t seem to be helping. He still licks his paw and rubs his face on the couch, does any one have any help for me? Thanks.

I have: Rescued, saved, loved, nurtured, and lots of other wonderful things with Shih Tzu’s, for the past thirty years.

In my experience, the fall and spring anywhere is pretty tuff on dogs, cats too. I used Avoderm dry dog food in California. When we moved to Florida, ten years ago, I couldn’t find it, so I switched to Nutro. Another Excellent dog food by the way.

The only thing I can think of is: something in the yard, the soil, the grass, mayber where you walk your doggie? Depending on what area of the untied states you live, it can be an allergy. Have you had any testing done? Also, have the vet check the white blood cells. He may be lacking something. I wish you luck. I know it’s hard.

    Rosie (8 year old brindle)
Sophia (4 year old black and white)
Lola (DOB – 9-11-07) She is blind and deaf, solid black, just four pounds, and the joy of all who meet her :)

Hi. I have a 3yr. old blk & white little girl. She is also my BABY! She has incredibly horrible allergies. We live in NJ now, but she also had them in Fla. She was tested at a vet who specializes in Dermatology. Turns out not only is she allergic to many trees but also to wool and feathers. Something very difficult to avoid (i.e. carpets). I began allergy shots that I administer every 3days. After 5weeks they havn’t helped.
The vet said it could take 6mos to a yr. In the mean time I have tried so many pills but all they do is make her sleepy.
I want so badly to ease her constant itching, scratching, and goopy eyes.
She eats allergy free kibble from the vet mixed w/ fresh ckn and veggies.

  7. Amy Trestman says:

As you may know, dogs evidence their allergies through their skin, not their noses as we humans do. Therefore your baby could be reacting to seasonal allergens such as grasses, mold, etc. There is a fabulous drug called Atopica which stops the allergens in their tracks. You will need to speak to your vet about this drug; it is very expensive but well worth it (although it is much much cheaper on PetMeds.com – about half the price)- it has truly changed our Golden Retriever’s life. Also, there are some excellent dry foods out there which contain a single source of protein and a single carb (such as Salmon and Sweet Potato) and contain no wheat, soy, eggs, or other common allergens. We now feed this food to our Golden and our Shih Tzu, and both used to be on ZD Gold.
    Hope this helps!

  8. Peggy says:

Early in my puppy’s life, she had many allergies. My vet recommended Omega 3 fatty acids. It is available in the pet store. I used it twice a day (in the food). After a year, she was allergy free. It did take a while, but it did work.
I do agree, you should talk to your Vet and if necessary, take your baby to a vet who specializes in dermatology or immunology.

  9. Judy says:

My baby was constantly having ear infections and licking his paws……We started out by changing his food and putting on a prescription diet but nothing helped…….the vet has put him on Atopica and within a week the licking has stopped.
