why does my dog keep barking?

my dog is a poodle/shih-tzu mix, 12 years old. we just brought him home from the vet today (haircut, physical, etc.) and ever since he's been home, he just keeps barking and barking! we keep him in the basement because he has accidents all over the house. anyway, whenever we go down there, we go, "what's wrong, boy, what's wrong? what are you barking at?" i was just down there and i concluded that all he wants is Milk-Bones! (if you don't know what those are, they're just doggy treats). i mean, yeah, i know he loves them and all, but he keep barking! he's been barking the whole time i've been typing this! he doesn't want outside, he has plenty of food/water, there's no windows he can see out of (they're too high).my cat was down there, so i brought him up because i thought maybe my cat was bothering him, but he's still barking even when the cat is up. they had to sedate him for his haircut and the drug just wore off like, an hour ago. could the drug have anything to do with it? help?!
p.s.-i gave him a few, but i know that he shouldn't have a lot, so i only gave him like, 2-3 and then i just stopped cuz he doesn't need anymore. right?
p.s.s.-i know it's not fair to keep him downstairs and i keep trying to convince my parents to let him come upstairs. but anyway, it's not my choice and he's been in the basement for like 2 years. and our basement isn't cold, dingy, creepy, etc. it's fully furnished and livable, it's like a huge living room. (it's big, like…big. lol. like, picture a professional tennis court. something like that. lol)

Because he doesn't like to be trapped all alone in the scary basement… he's probably scared and feels abandoned. House train him then bring him upstairs!

yes the sedation could have something to do with it. When my dog comes out of sedation, he cries and whimpers. The vet says it is because he is feeling loopy and he is scared of the way he feels.
Maybe you should consider keeping your dog upstairs with you and supervise him so he doesnt potty. This way he will get more attention and love, which he definately needs. Then when he is ready for sleep at nite, put him back in the basement. Better yet, get a crate and keep it upstairs and put him in the crate when you cannot watch him. Then take him outside to potty. It doesnt sound fair that he cant be with you and maybe that is why he is barking.

well the drug probably is the reason because drugs work differently on dogs than it does us, he may be tripping out just like humans do on mushrooms. Maybe you should take him for a walk and let him burn energy and maybe give him a bath, and then just let him go to sleep. He might just be wanting attention so play with him.

Most dogs have only one motto for life, and that is to please their owners. He probably just wants to be around you. Just like a little kid, they usually don't like to be where there are no people around. There is no truth to the saying "you can't teach an old dog new tricks", so with determination and time, you should be able to house train your dog. Otherwise if house training is not an option, than putting things downstairs to keep him occupied.

Kongs are a great toy to keep dogs occupied. They come in many sizes, and even have lots of different healthy recipes you can try. An appropriately sized rawhide chew is another option.

Crate training is a wonderful method for house training. The Humane Society of the United States has a good site for crate training.

Further to what the first answer was AND the last answer, your little pooch is probably scared out his whits at what just happened to him (not the basement) and because of that, he's going on a barking spree to get your attention for him to come down and comfort him.

Have you tried being around him down there, if it's fully furnished? Just try going down there and maybe spending a good few hours with him. See if he stops barking.

If he does then he's probably developed a condition known as "separation anxiety" which basically means he wants to be around for whatever reason and CAN'T STAND being away.

Remember, dogs don't understand that you're literally just upstairs. You can tell them, but they don't understand, which means that you need to get him to believe that you are actually coming back. It's all in the mind ^_^
