Dog grooming?
Our newly adopted 4 yo shih tzu has only been to the groomers once when she was rescued and they had to shave her because of all her matting. She doesn't really need a haircut now, we just want to get her bathed and mainly her nails cut. I could bathe her but I'm not comfortable with doing her nails!
Should I take her back to the lady that groomed her when she was rescued — she charges $35 (inc. bath, nails, ears, expressing her glands and any trimming)? She was good and I would like to stay with her when our shih tzu needs more grooming. Or should I go to someplace like Petsmart — who charges $23 (inc. bath, nails and ears).
I'm not sure of the experience of the Petsmart groomers — any good/bad experiences with them?
Honestly, if you've found a good groomer that does a great job, stick with her!! For an extra $12, you'll have peace of mind knowing that she is experienced, and has already proven her abilities with your dog's grooming needs.
Its like finding a good hairdresser…. if you found a GREAT one, that did an excellent cut/style on your hair, wouldn't you be willing to stick with that person for the extra money? As opposed to taking a risk with someone who might/might not be experienced, and be capable of doing just as good of a job?
If you are willing to bathe the dog yourself, just give the groomer (the one you've already been to) a call and find out what they would charge just to clip the dog's nails. It would only take them a few minutes, and it won't cost you much!

Here is my suggestion and it has worked well for our dog, we have a Cairn terrier and they required quite a bit of grooming.
I would find someone in your area (usually breeders work best) who can show you how to clip your dog by youself. Not only is this the best way to learn how your breed should look, it also saves a TON of money.
We bath our dog our selves and we also learned how to clip nails from the groomer. If you do your dog's nails once a week you can get away with just taking off the small tip and don't even get close to the quik "blood line".
If you still aren't comfortable with the nails thing, you can also ask vets to do this for you for about $5-10.
I am sure that most breeders would agree that groomers, even the most clean ones can help to spread skin diseases to other dogs. I would stay away from those places at all costs.
Good Luck

I had the same issues
it is better to stay with a groomer that knows your pet and his quirks I do not groom my westie very often but he has allergies and it makes him itch to the slightest touch I tried another groomer once but they missed and cut him when he flinched so that was the last time that I went to another you can try another groomer follow the same type of questioning that you would picking out a personal hair dresser

a gd groomer is hard to find! plus since your dog has meet her before that will make her more comfortable with the groomer in the long run! it is also very important to get there ears cleaned and glads emptied- u might as well go where u know they will do a good job, you could try petsmart this one time if you like them stay with them if not you know where to take her the next time!! gd luck!

Take her to the groomer, it's not a big difference and your dog will feel better since she already knows the person.

Most groomers will do just nails for something like $5-15, depending on your area.
If the lady did a good job with your dog, I'd go back there. The quality of grooming at Petsmart can be very variable.

I take my Corgi to the Petsmart groomers and they have always been very gentle and patient with her. Another reason I am so impressed by them is that they are so kind to all of the dogs that they get. My dog is terrified of water, and has layers of under coat, and gets nervous when it's time to go because of all the bigger dogs, and they just soothe her and walk with her to the back. I give them two thumbs up!

All groomers I know have a separate price for baths and full groomings. A bath at our store is $20 -$25. The $20 is bath, express anals, clean ears, clip hair under eyes & from pads of feet, rectum. Scissor feet round. Clip nails.
The $25 includes all of the above, plus we scissor the head.
If the dog needs to be dipped for parasites, it is additional $5.
If you have found someone good, please try to stay with them. Ask about a monthly plan if it would be less We have a great number of weekly and bi-weekly clients. Most get a full groom once a month and then either the other 1 or 3 weeks they get just bath stuff. If they do this, it would really be a good deal. We don't go down too much our price, but we do the extras for free. Like dip, medicated shampoo, filing nails,….
Good luck with your baby!

You should be able to bring your dog in to just get her nails clipped. I have a Yorkie and he needs his nails clipped more then he needs his hair cut so in between groomings I bring him in to get his nails clipped. I would suggest to stay with the same groomer. $35 is a good price, but I think its good to always bring them to the same place that way they know the routine. My parents also have a Yorkie and they bring her to Petsmart and the only problem that they run into is that they don't always cut her hair the way they want it and its different every time because its never the same person.

Hi, I would say to give the Petsmart groomers a chance. If you have a bad experience with them, then you've learned a valuable lesson: not to go there again! I think its important to definitely explore alternatives when it comes to your dog. You just may save money or find better service–and then again you may not, but that is just a part of the learning experience.
When I first adopted my dog, he was quite smelly but not in horrible condition. I took him to a dog salon that did a wonderful job cleaning him up. The bill was approx. $40. Seeing as that was quite pricey, I found a dog self-service wash that charged only $15 and provided all the materials needed to wash the dog, including industrial sized tubs, aprons, shampoos, hair dryer, etc. It turned out just as good as the salon! Moral of the story, I was openminded to options and found something better. I hope you do, too!
