I have a Shih Tzu, and every time he gets a haircut he goes into a blue funk for up to a week. He curls up on kitchen chairs that are pushed in, or anyother place he can hide. I have to practactly force him to go outside. and doesn't want to play. I don't explain why he does this. what do you think?
I grom my dog myself.
I goom him with clippers, not scissors.
The cliperes are not loud, and I soothe and praise him through the whole process.
plus he gets a treat after he's groomed
My sister thinks he's embarressed about not having his fur.
Maybe he suffers from separation anxiety and absolutely hates being somewhere with out you. To top it off there's this strange person grooming him and maybe he just hates the whole experience.
Also maybe you can try a different place. Maybe someone is mean with him there- you never know…
Sounds like Separation Anxiety and not liking to be groomed by a stranger.
My Shih Tzu gets groomed monthly and always comes back kinda funny too. Like I abandoned him and wasn't coming back. Like I left him on the operating table alone. He's very particular about his eyes because they are extremely sensitive. I usually wipe the funk from his eyes 3 times a day but specifically when he comes back from the groomers he won't let me touch him there and he snarls but without the growling. My Shih Tzu is a quiet one. Feed him treats before and after that day and praise him all day long. Show him it's a good and exciting thing.
Poor little Shi Tzu : )

Where do you take your dog to be groomed, sometimes if you don't find the right facility the whole grooming experience will scare your dog to dead. I went to the pet store the other day and the whining of pets in the grooming and bathing area was something chilly, poor lil ones, I thought.
I took my dog to a salon once and he was kind of wary after (not scared at all but just different), after I learned how to do it I can groom my dog without using a leash.

Maybe if his grooming experience was a nightmare for him he's thinking that you were punishing him or something. I'd for sure check out how they are grooming your pet.
After reading your additional details, maybe your sister is right. He misses his longer hair.

weird… probably freaks him out…
Few questions i wanna ask…
*does he do this any other time?
*Is the hair cut done w/ scissors or a shaver thing-a-magig?
*If its done with the shaver, is it really loud or soft?
*if its loud, is he used to loud noises?
*have u ever tried soothing him while his hair's getting cut?
just outta curiousity… and also some of these questions could answer ur question…i can update my answer when u answer my questions…

I don't know about for a whole week, maybe the groomer scares him and he's depressed for a while after. My pup gets himself so worked up (he's fine with the actual grooming but he freaks with baths), that for the rest of the day he sleeps. He's like that after going to any groomer he's been to. But if he's that down for that long, maybe look into another groomer.

Sounds like he had a bad experence at the groomers. Change your groomers and read reviews from other clients.

Maybe your dogs been snipped by scissors or something….or maybe the people at the grooming place traumatized him or something…..and sometimes they wont tell you because they don't want to loose your business…..so maybe you should take him to a different place and see if he acts different. If not then maybe your dog is just really afraid of the groomers….

I would guess that if they use an electric razor on his bottom they may be burning him and that will hurt a few days. Take a look at his butt and see how short it is and if they have burned him. You may also want to give the person who groomed him a call and ask them if they make sure they use the oil on their razor. Maybe take him to a different place next time.

I had a lab/springer mixed. He required grooming and I did it myself as well. Before I started grooming him myself he would walk the neighborhood with me happily. After I started grooming him, he refused to go past a certain house and would only go that far cause that neighbor would always give my dog a treat.
I think the neighbor dogs made fun of him or something, but it sure had a bad affect on my poor dog.
It is quite possible that you and I are not meant to groom our dogs and maybe a professional would have made both our dogs happier.
