What can I do about my shih tzu scratching all the time?

She’s a little over a year old and has done this since she was a puppy. I use an all natural shampoo, which I bought from my groomer, to bathe her in about once every 7-10 days. I make sure I rinse her out extra well every time. I see absolutely no fleas on her. I have taken her to the vet who gave her a cortisone shot…didn’t help at all. She eats Innova, Evo dog food by Natura, which is grain-free, treats are also Innova brand. We don’t have any other pets. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do for her and what could be causing her this skin irritation?

I have a Shih Tzu that was born with the same problem. They are prone to skin problems and I know how you feel. I do find that when you give them a Oatmeal bath it helps calm the itching down alot, My vet also advised me to give him a half a tablet of Benadryl. I would okay this with your vet. Also have your doctor check for mange . Mange is a parasitic infestation of the skin. It causes hair loss and itching intense itching that can lead to infection. There are several different types of mange and all should be treated. I hope this has helped you.

You are bathing her too often. Once every four to eight weeks is plenty. Bathing too often can cause the skin to be stripped of its natural oils causing dry skin and itching. Her problem may be deeper than this but try bathing less often and see if you get any results.

California naturals is a dog food for dogs with any type of food allergy. It has a short ingredient list to stay away from things a lot of dogs are allergic to. The vet could do a screening to see what she’s having problems with but it’s pretty pricey. Bathe her less often, maybe once a month if she doesn’t get really dirty from something. You might add a oil to her diet if she has dry skin.

Food born allergies are only 10% of the time. She’s probably allergic to grass, dust mites, the list is so large.
Since she is so young I recommend allergy testing and desensitization. It’ s not as expensive as it sounds and will cure your pet within longest 2yrs. Usually results after the first set is done.

I agree you have been giving her too many baths and that causes dry skin go to the dog groomers and ask them if there is anything you can buy at the store that would help but at a low price one time i found a conditioner that actually moisturized the dogs skin.

are you feeding him Lamb, I find that they are senstive to lamb. Rice is a trigger also. But I just keep a bottle of the benadryl and eyedropper around, usually calms them down.
Sweetpea jr. doesn’t scratch that much, and he doesn’t get lamb or rice. Good luck, you will love your baby to death. jb
