am at my witts!! i got him about 8 weeks and i have worked with him all the time with potty training, to this day he goes out every hour okay he gets rewared i tell him how good he is i acted super happy when he goes outside, remind you every hour okay, so we come in i try to give him free time in the house and he'll find a spot and pee on the carpet so for this reason i have been taking away his free time and just when i think let me try again he'll go again just the other day for the first time he pee on the hard wood floors! so i wake up at 1am 3am to take him out in the yard so when i get up at 6am theres a huge mess waiting for me, i am a housewife so i am able to be with him at home to take him out everyhour but it's takeing over my life, i go to the store i stress out cuz i need to be back within the hour to put him out, i want him lose but i end up getting more than playtime, i hate starting my moring off with that big mess of poop and pee i don't know what to do
he has a crate and he uses it in there as well after he comes inside
~I have 2, 11 week old shi pups here. And I am out every hour with them. They will piddle 2 or 3 times and than we let them come back in for about an hour. I spend about 15 min out there with them. If no piddle back they go in their pen, and I try again in about a 1/2 hour. But they do piddle 2-3 times in that 15 min. As for waking up to a mess, are you letting them eat in the evening and have a b.m. before bed? our guys eat dinner about 4 in the afternoon and poo around 6. They get no more food until the next am at 6 am.
FYI shi's can be very stubborn about house breaking, they will try just about everything to avoid what you want lol. But once they get the fact there is no way around it you're set.

clean it up the best u can

8 weeks is really not a long time in terms of housebreaking. A lot of dogs take (get ready) a YEAR to be fully trained.
I think you'd have much better luck if you switched to crate training. I think your puppy has too much freedom right now and is confused about when & where it is ok to *go*.

I have raised (and successfully housebroken!) 3 shih tzus…. all through crate training.
if you have a yard leave him out there until he is older and fully trained. if its not fenced. get the invisible fence that has a shock collar for the dog.

Well he is still a baby so he might outgrow it.When they get really excited or something frightens them sometimes they go to the bathroom..If it persists then you should take him to professional training and see if that helps. They are usually really good with helping the animals with things like that. You have to find one that does that kind of training though.just search it on yahoo or google and call around.good luck.

Well we have had many dogs in the past and we currently have 2. What we have done is a few things and all have worked for our dogs.
- We put the dog in an enclosed area like a bathroom or kitchen area if we are leaving for the day or what not and that way the pee and the poop are in an enclosed and small area.
- We rubbed the dogs nose in it every time it went to the bathroom and told him/her "no" very strictly and put the dog outside.
It sounds like your dog might have an overactive bladder. Have you tried talking to your vet about it? Good luck with your dog and I hope it stops being so troublesome for you!

i would leave the back door open and when he do the go outside thing for a long tim and then stop and if hit works and he gose out side then play with him and if he dont then go to a dog helper

I have a brand new puppy too, and we've trained her to use a bell to ring whenever she has to use the restroom. Whenever you take your dog outside, ring the bell. The sound of the bell will notify that it's time to use the restroom. Once your dog gets use to hearing the bell, they will use their nose to ring the bell themselves–also, its loud enough so you'll be able to hear it in the other room and then… RUN! That'll mean your doggie has to go out.

we also take our puppy out every hour. when ever she makes a mess, put her nose right IN it (dogs don't like that) and spank him, but not too hard. and immediately take him outside. before you take him outside, it's a good idea to sit him by he door for a few seconds. we layed a sheet of news paper by the door to sit our dog on.

This has helped me with potty traing my dogs. Though you will have to put ur foot down and trust me, i didn't want to do this but it did help, i admit.
Next time he does his business in the house, take him to it and make him smell it and with a newspaper hit his nose. Not 2 hard though. and if you want, afterwards, put him outside for a while.
another thing too though, there are products at pet stores that help with this. there potty trainin pads or something like that. i haven't tried them so i can't sauy whether they work or not.

Try crate training. There is plenty of information on the net about this method, but you basically get a crate (plastic or metal cage) that is only large enough for the puppy to stand up and turn around in. Since dogs do not like to soil themselves or their sleeping area, the dog will not go potty in his crate. Put the puppy on a potty schedule of every couple hours. If he does not go outside during his potty break, put him back in the crate for 10-20 minutes and try again. Continue rewarding him for pottying outside and give him free time ONLY IF HE HAS JUST GONE PEE AND POOP OUTSIDE. After about 30 min. of free time, return him to his crate for a nap and repeat the process. A six-month old puppy should be able to hold his pee and poop overnight.
this method might sound harsh, but it is actually considered quite humane and effective. Google "crate-training" for more info. Good luck!

You need to try crate training. Put the puppy in the crate (only 1 that he fits in just right, you don't want it too big) and let him out a few times a day to have short socialization time, to eat, and to go to the bathroom. If you let him out every hour he will not learn to hold it. He needs to learn to control his bladder muscles. If he doen't go to the bathroom in 5 minutes or less when you let him out put him right back in. If he does let him stay out and socialize.
DON'T EVER use crate for punishment! Good luck!

Continue taking him out every hour but at night and when you can't watch his every move put him in a crate. Dogs will not go to the bathroom where they sleep. Most crates come with a divider so you can start out by giving him just enough room to turn around and then give him more room until the divider is gone and he has the whole crate. My dog loves his crate its like his den he goes in there to play, eat and nap even when he has free time. This will work.

he is still a puppy there will be "accidents" here and there, you have to be very dilligent and watch when he is about to go pee or poop then you just pick him up and take him outside… also try crate training it really does help because dogs dont really like messing up their bed and so instead of peeing in the crate he will be waiting for you to take him outside were he can relieve himself. also try to keep him in one place like the family room were you can watch him. eventually when he learns to go outside you will be able to let him roam freely in the house… another thing, if it gets to serious and you cant handle it go to a professional traner or the vet because he may have a bladder problem..,. i hope this helps ,,

put your dog in a cage if he goes in the house for like 10- 20 mins or so, then he will learn his lesson because its is like a time out but when he is in the cage put a potty training pad thing in there that u can buy at the store for dogs, when u sleep dont wake up every hour just wake up every 4 or 5 hours because you are stressing your self out, your dog will need to sleep in a cage with a potty pad and water and if u want a blanket, i do this all the time with my dog and spend time out side with it so u can make sure it pees out side and if u ever catch him peeing inside yell at him, piont at his or her nose and pick it up and bring it ourside in the grass and let it finish! good luck, this helped for me!!

you need to get a really good cleaning agent to clean the urine up, because with some cleaners you think that you have cleaned it up but if you take a black light i think thats what they use it will show you what you missed. also you may need to take him out every half hour and take him for plenty of walks in this situation take him out for 8 walks a day. also is he neutered? he may just be marking his territory, but still in all this is not good. also how much water does he get a day? do you take his food and water away at night? i do this with my dog at 9o'clock his food and water is taken away and at 10 we go outside to use the bathroom and then he sleeps the rest of the night.

You have to be patient, its just a puppy, I had one but it took 1 year to make him to poop outside, but I found out that pee in carpet are their weakness, either for marking their territory or anything else, but finally he stop doing that.
The phase you are crossing now is pretty normal, be more patient Shih Tzus are adorable, before he was 1 year old, he stood in front of the main door to let me know he needed to go outside, as well he make me follow him to let me know he needed more water or food, please be patient.
Carpets somehow store smells that I don“t know why they usually have the need (while puppies) to pee on, but as well some cleaning stuff (in the vet) can actually make those odors not so appealing for them.
As soon as I walked a little more often he stop doing so much mess inside the house. Please again, be patient, I had a puppy cause a friend of mine was exactly as you are feeling now, believe me that you would regret to give away a puppy like that just because the training is hard. Give him time.
Good luck.

Looking for a Shih Tzu.
Please consider taking a training class. It will be so fun for you and your dog, and worth the money and time. I too got a shih tzu at 8 weeks, and tried everything I could based on what I heard and read, but it turned out I was wrong! The trainer really helped me get things done right. You can ask a trainer specific questions about your pet, and he can help you with exactly what your pet needs.

The best way to get a shiz or a lassa to stop messing in the house is keep it in a crate or dog box , I know that sounds mean but small breeds actually do better with crate training because the world to them is so huge ,, they get a feeling of safety in a smaller place, I'm not saying use the crate or dog box as punishment,, But use it as a way of life for the dog , they will get use to it quickly , sadly the shiz and lassa breeds are stupid animals , brain the size of a pennant ,, there awesome pets and better lap dogs u will never find, and the little buggars have attitude , as they get older they get smarter,, our lassa has just stopped using the house as a toilet in the last 2 yrs and he is 5 yrs old, He goes in the box when we are not home , and to bed every night , he is outside for about 4 hrs during the day off and on , He Is a very happy little guy ,

I was in the same position you are not too long ago, I understand the stress you are having with this.
I have a 1 1/2 year old shih tzu and house training was very hard. They are sweeties, but can be very stubborn about that. Just a couple of suggestions. Whenever you are away from the house make sure to have him crated; though if he's going in the crate it sounds like his crate might be a bit too big. Also, if he's going around the same area, you can use that UrineGone stuff because he's already marked his territory and will keep going there if he can smell it. Other than that, make sure to put him out after he's had some exercise, that usually helps. Keep up the going outside consistently, like every 2 hours or so, and praise him when he does go where he's supposed to.
I know it's difficult, they are stubborn little guys with this, but are so worth it. Best of luck to you and your little guy.
