Shih Tzu Rescue

Shih Tzu Rescue is Worth the Effort

Thursday, September 22nd, 2011

It is nice to talk about dogs and how they really are men’s best friends, but some statistics reveal another facet of the story: every year, tens of millions of dogs are euthanized all over the world, and among them, 3.5 million came from the US. All these dogs were pets at some moment of their life, but their owners changed their minds and gave them up to shelters, rescue organizations or simply on the street and no other people wanted them. 3.5 million dogs make a huge number that is hard to imagine. It is incredible – but this one hundred per cent true. The number may be higher but never lower.

Shih Tzu rescue or adoption is a better option than buying a puppy because, however small or microscopic the impact is, you will really make a dent in the statistics stated above. You will save the life of at least one dog and the Shih Tzu that you will save will know it. This way you will acquire an exceptional pet and you will be surprised to notice that it seems aware of the fact you have saved it. The idea of rescuing or adopting a dog of the Shih Tzu breed is an estimable one. Nevertheless, the idea should be pursuit by looking for the Shih Tzu rescue or adoption centers in your area and, if not, adoption organizations for mixed breeds of dogs, then visit them until you find the dog to fall in love with.

Paperwork

The process of shih tzu rescue or adoption is not an easy one, as there are lots of papers to fill in and many formalities to be completed, but as frustrated one may feel with that fact, they have the role of verifying that the prospective owner and the Shih Tzu pet are fitting one with each other. There are different advantages too in having a Shih Tzu rescued or adopted dog:

1. You will have a very nice, well-trained and well-adjusted dog as it will receive the basic training at the shelter. The shelters have qualified personnel who usually take many pains to ensure that the dog is well behaved and adapted to the new surroundings.

2. You will feel great satisfaction for saving a life. Everytime you look and interact with your rescued Shih Tzu you will learn to appreciate life a little more, and love your dog a little more.

3. You will have an adult Shih Tzu and need not bother about puppy-hood, which is the worst possible phase in any dog-owner relationship. You will be able to avoid problems like teething and chewing on the furniture or shoes.

4. Furthermore, the the Shih Tzu can be trained with treats and tricks that you will enjoy. However, all you need is to love that really sweet dog and be loved by it.

Shih-tzu jealousy issues helppp!?

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

I rescued a shih-tzu about a 2 years ago, and she still has not gotten use to my two cats! She attacks them, very viciously! I know she can’t hurt them because she has an underbite and can’t bite hard at all, but she still chases the cats and scares them to where I’ve had to now keep my 2 cats in my bedroom and lock my shihtzu out of the room! Is there anyway I can train her out of chasing them and attacking them, it really scares them. I’ve tried yelling at her and spanking her and nothings worked so far.

help??

She’s not jealous, she’s a carnivore with a prey drive. Spanking isn’t effective, it only teaches a dog to fear you because you are hitting it.

Instead of getting worked up and yelling when she chases the cats, try a distraction method like shaking a penny can or squirting her with a squirt bottle. Yelling creates more excitement for dogs.

If worse comes to worse you can train her with a remote collar, which delivers a small shock when she exhibits the unwanted behavior. I think this would be my last resort.

We lost our shih-tzu? =(?

Friday, October 24th, 2008

we lost our shih-tzu this saturday. she was a puppy mill rescue, we lost her the day we adopted her. long and stupid story, worst day ever. we still havent found her yet. she doesnt know the area and barely knows her name. we dont know where she went but we’ve been scowering the area for days now. called all humane societies, the police, informed people we see along the street, informed her fosters, put up online ads, been driving and walking around for several hours a day. we have put up flyers everywhere, the grocery store, community centers, the neighborhoods that she most likely slipped in to, the veternarians office, a lot of the bus stops, almost everywhere we could think of.

today was day 3 and its over and still no results, it gets really cold at night around here too =( shes shy and still doesnt trust people yet, but she would never bite.

does anyone else have any other ideas on what we can do? and what are the chances that someone found her and decides to keep her, what are the chances she didnt make it? what else is left to do other than keep searching and checking the humane societies?
my family and i are really getting desperate
yes she is microchipped.
however she isnt wearing a collar or harness.
shes also spayed
however the microchip is still under the name of the humane society we adopted her from, since we just got her and havent had the chance to change the information yet.
thank you.

we did contact her fosters. she couldnt have gone back to the puppy mill, she was one of the dogs from the tennessee puppy mill case, the one with over 700 dogs. she was never happy there. if anything shes trying to find her fosters. and thats over in virginia, she doesnt know the way =(
uhm to the person who wanted the long story. sure you can have it.

well, we brought her home, as i said shes a puppy mill dog and was previously with her foster of 2.5 months, we brought her home, she seemed a little nervous but we could tell she was settling. actually one of our neighbors, some guy from the home owners association came over and did the entire "knock and open the door" method so as soon as he opened the door he bolted. WE didnt open the door, we didnt even want him over anyways, he just came. he was unwelcome. but either way, she bolted my dad chased her about 2 miles non-stop to a nearby gastation at a major intersection, she ran across the road, luckily there were not many cars though, and my dad finally lost her. my mom tried following in the car, my brother searched through the woods. i wasnt there, i was actually away and i didnt find out until a couple hours after it happened when i got back home. none of us wanted it to happen
no ones saying this isnt our fault, yes it is, we should have been more cautious of the door, my mom was keeping an eye on her, but from a distance. shes our second shih-tzu, and this is the first time something like this has ever happened.

Where were you when you lost her?
I stopped at the store one time with my little dachshund and I needed to run in for only a moment to pick up just a couple of things. It was fall, it was not cold but not hot. I left both windows cracked in the front, locked the door and went inside. I wasn’t in there for 10 minutes, but when I came out he was gone. I panicked, looked everywhere, asked every one. I went inside the store and asked loss prevention to review the tape from the area of the lot I was parked and they did. They seen a lady carrying him around the parking lot, but never could trace her back to her car.
I did everything you are doing, but I decided to go back to the store where we lost him and put up signs at all entrances hoping whoever picked him up would come back and see. Exactly one week later I received a call from an animal hospital that had him for 6 days at that point. Apparently I had left the window down too far, he jumped out and this woman had seen him and took him home for one night and the next day took him to this facility. She went back to the store the following Wed., 7 days after she found him and seen the sign. She called the place she took him to and they called me.
I had lost all hope that we would see him again, but I was persistent at doing everything I could to get him back and it worked.
I would call every animal shelter/hosp. in the area and let them know that you have lost your little dog so they are aware if one is brought in. I am so sorry,I know what you’re going through. I wish you all the luck in the world.

We are all here but the storm is still battering us badly. Transformers are blowing up with huge green explosions all over the place. Many, many trees are down everywhere. Our front yard tree is missing about half it’s leaves.

Is this dog a Shih Tzu?

Hello, I just rescued this poor dog. When I found her, her fur was very bad. It was very tangled all over her body and her face was covered with tangles too. She was cover in grass and dirt. I don’t have experience with smaller breeds or dogs with high maintenance fur. So far I went to the vet and got her three shots and went to petco to fix her fur. I took her to my friend’s house because she owns a shih tzu, both dogs look very similar, the only difference was that this dog is an inch taller. What do you guys think she is mix with? She’s 9.5lb with white/brown fur.
Llasa Apso looks really similar to Shih Tzu. I am no expert that's why I'm asking you guys haha. Thanks for your help.

Heres another picture

I just measured her, her length is 9-9.5 at shoulder length. According to akc shih tzu can be 8-11 inches. My friend is convince that she's a mix, but I don't see the difference between her and a pure bred shih tzu. Another thing that I notice is that her temprament is REALLY calm. She does not bark or run, she sleeps all day. The vet thinks she's around 3. She's a joy. Thanks for your input.

Yep, sure looks like a shih tzu to me, i have 2 and I really dont see a mix. Check with your vet to make sure… Nice of you to rescue the dog!!!!!! Congrats you have a lovely furball to look after now, Good Luck!
