Hypoallergenic Dog Breeds: They’re Nothing to Sneeze At!

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

Hypoallergenic dogs are a great solution for would be dog owners that have allergies. Many dog lovers that thought they would never be able to own a dog because of the uncontrollable symptoms to pet dander, may not have considered a hypoallergenic dog. A small number of dog breeds are considered hypoallergenic, meaning they do not cause allergic reactions, either because they shed only small amounts of hair or because their dog dander is not allergy producing.

Keep in mind that there is no such thing as a non-allergenic dog or a non-shedding dog, a common misconception by some owners with allergy problems that purchase dogs believing they will be cured of dog dander issues.

Although the amount of allergy producing dander will be reduced with a hypoallergenic dog, owners still need to go through a regular routine to ensure that pet dander from pet hair is removed from their environment. It is important to recognize that it isnâ??t the pet hair itself causing the allergic reaction, but the dander that comes off when the dog shedding occurs. Dogs that make little to no dander are the dogs that are considered hypoallergenic dogs and will be best suited for a home with someone who is allergy sensitive.

What Causes Dog Allergies…

As previously noted, it is not the actual dog or even the hair of the dog, but the dander that flakes off the skin and causes allergies. Unfortunately, this dander can easily be carried throughout the house when it attaches to the hair of the dog, falls onto the floor, couches or beds of a home, causing potential allergens to be spread throughout the home.

Keep in mind that many humans with allergies will make the mistake of buying a hairless dog or a short-haired dog thinking they will produce less allergens than a long-haired breed. This is not always the case. In fact, some medium to long-haired dogs produce little to no dander, while other short haired dogs produce a lot of dander. Remember that all dogs produce dander, it is just that some produce a great deal less than others.

Tips for Reducing Pet Allergens…

1. Purchase a high suction vacuum that can quickly and effectively remove almost all pet dander from the home. Use this on a daily to weekly basis as needed.

2. Find a large air purifier that can be used in the main areas of the house. Keep the air purifier running at all times in order to effectively reduce dander. Remember to clean the purifier on a regular basis as well.

3. Brush your pet 2-3 times a day. Give dogs a bath at least once a week to remove excess dander. Do this outside so that dander will not collect in part of the home.

4. Limit dog access to your sleeping and sitting areas. Regularly wash sheets, curtains, pillow covers, table clothes and any other removable upholstery covers.

Also, if you have allergies and are considering the purchase of a hypoallergenic dog, it might be wise to spend as much time as possible around the dog beforehand to see how you will react. By doing so, it might save you, and the dog, from the emotional turmoil of having to give up your new friend if you find your allergenic reactions too strong.

Even though author Richard Livitski doesn’t suffer from dog allergies, he is sympathetic toward those who do, so he wrote this article to help. He does though run a dog names website http://www.dog-names-and-more.com where dog names as well as grooming, training, and dog care tips can be found.

maltese/shih-tzu gave birth still curious?

Sunday, November 2nd, 2008

my maltese/shih-tzu gave birth this morning and i am curious to know should her stomach be flat, should the babies be feeding all the time?? can anyone help please.

More info please…

How many pups did she have? Is that number the same as the number on the x-ray/Ultra sound that you had with your vet while she was pregnant?

What did your breeding mentor say about her stomach? Were they there with you during the birth? Do you have their phone number handy to call them and ask and express your concerns?

Does anyone have any negatives about Maltese/Shih Tzu’s?

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

I have a Maltese already and he is wonderful. But I want to get a dog for my 16th bday and I want a maltese/shih tzu. Lucas, my maltese, is very large for a maltese, and i LOVEEEE with a capital L small white dogs. So if I get a malshi (maltese/shih tzu) I will get a smaller, white dog. I also want a girl so I can dress her up. Lucas is six and a bit too old for dress ups. I try dressing Lucas up, but most of the clothes you get for boys are yuck. The nice clothes are all pink.

So I suppose I am asking …. do you have any negatives about Malshis? And should I get a new dog or just be happy with Lucas?

Poor Lucas! He is going to be pushed out of the picture, so to speak, if you get another dog. First you’ll be spending all your time with the new puppy and then you’ll be dressing her up all the time. After six years of love and devotion, this is the reward he gets? There will be problems, too. Dogs are territorial and Lucas won’t like his territory being invaded by a small white stranger who is stealing all the attention. Lucas will begin to pee in the house and maybe poo, too. It will be natural for him to growl and snap at the puppy and he’ll probably get punished for that, too, while he was only trying to defend his territory.

In nature, females are always alpha so Lucas will not only lose his territory but he will also lose his position as alpha dog. The smaller dog is going to steal his bed, his toys, his treats, and most of his time with you.

IMO, Lucas is not the only one too old to play dress-up. You are, too. Dress-up games are for little girls with dollies. What happens to the new dog when you get tired of playing dress-up with her? And what happens when you go away to college in a couple of years? Do your parents want to keep TWO dogs? Maybe two dogs that don’t like each other much? If they have to pick only one, who gets the boot, poor old Lucas?

Also IMO, you should just be happy with Lucas. If you aren’t already, you’ll be dating soon and hanging out with your friends or doing homework the rest of the time and will have hardly any time left over for even a goldfish.

I know this hasn’t been pleasant to read but it is factual.

My Shih Tzu is in heat and a Maltese got her. What to do?

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

I have a Shih Tzu and we were keeping her away from our male Maltese. She was just a few days from finishing her heat cycle and my son came into the house quickly and left the door open. In 2 minutes she went out to where the Maltese was and they mated. Nothing I could do. What will I do with the pups? My dogs are pure bred. Mom is 8 pounds and dad 4 pounds. Any suggestions?

Spay her. Problem solved.

hey i have a maltese shih tzu, just over a year old.
i was wondering some tricks to teach her?
she is very smart, but sometimes i cant find the time to train her, so im about to start putting in big effort.
she has learnt sit, stay, come, and one night for fun my isster and i taught her to play dead!
her name is daphne.
thannnksss :D

We taught our Shih Tzu how to dance ^_^ Teach her how to beg first and then get her to spin around while standing on her two back feet! It’s super cute! <3

“Leave it” is also fun, put a treat on the floor and tell her to leave it, see how long she can go!

“Go to bed” can be nifty, we’re also currently working on bow :3

My dog is a Shih-Tzu X Maltese. I am wondering how big she'll get?

Friday, August 29th, 2008

She's about 17 weeks old and she's the size of a medium Chihuahua. She's been growing fast, too. Her mom was a Shih-Tzu and her dad was a Maltese. I think she has more of her mom in her because her mom was black and white and her dad was white…so if you know what she'll look like, please help me.

You can't tell what genes a dog picked up just cause the dog has the colouring of the mother. She could be big as one breed, as small as the other, or somewhere in between. IF both breeds prior to being bred ( unlikely) were bred to standard.. Then you will get something right around the two breeds.. Very likely the two dogs bred were poor quality and not bred to standard so either could be too big or too small.. So you could end up with anything at all.
