Imperial Shih Tzu

Whats the best food to feed a shih tzu puppy?

Friday, August 15th, 2008

I have a 11weeks old imperial shih tzu if that matters and we gave him flea medicine and all and he still licks his paws every now and then and bites his legs (sometimes). So i think it might be allergies { is it possible?} and it might can be the food. The owner said she feed him Eukanuba, but i heard thats whats in the food is bad for my puppy. Does anyone know FORSURE what is BEST for a shih tzu puppy?

A raw diet is the ultimate diet for any dog, especially dogs with allergies.
If you want to look into it, here are some websites that can help you:
www.bigdogsporch.com
www.rawfed.com/myths
www.rawmeatybones.com
www.rawlearning.com

If you want to feed kibble look into evo, orijen, innova, merrick, wellness. basically avoid corn, soy, wheat, by-products, colors, preservatives. and pick a kibble with a specified meat as its first ingredient, even better if the first two are meat.
Avoid grains if possible.

They're the same thing. And it's just another name for underweight unhealthy dog. Don't buy one.

A healthy shihtzu is 9-16 pounds.

I own a rare, 7yr. old female, Imperial Shih Tzu w/ an itch (no fleas). Is it common for this breed?

Friday, August 15th, 2008

Please help Piqa (pronounced:Peak-a) who is adorable as she is rare… A silver … well my baby! I've had her since birth. I'm single & 0 kids. She's always been an itcher. Now it is so extreme that's all you hear her doing… Has anyone had this happen? I am a super worry wart & am watching for change. She is VERY well kept… spoiled in fact! IDEAS? (Trying to avoid the Vet!) <ThxPUPPYparent….Kate

Has she been diagnose with allergies? Call your vet and find out how much benadryl you can try for her weight. If benadryl helps stop the itch, then it is allergies, and the vet can give her an allergy shot that will last 1-3 months at a time.

If Benadryl does not work at all, then she should be checked by a vet for skin infections and/or fungus.

my imperial shih tzu had a seizure… (read first)?

Friday, August 15th, 2008

i was not there but my dad was he dropped on the ground an closed his eyes and just started seizuring… the vet will see him tomorrow he said to give the puppy hone because he probably had low blood sugar because he was eating pedigree pouches of chicken and chiken and rice… he is going to the vet tomorrow like i said
you opinions on this situation?

First of all if your pet is a young pup,you will need to make sure it is eating good every day,as its blood sugar will drop causing a seizure type trama.Give the pet some honey on its tongue when seizure starts and this will cause his sugar level to raise therefore bringing it out of the seizure. This problem can be corrected if it eats good at each feeding, but if an inherited problem the pet will need to be put on medication. If not eating good, the pet may need to be wormed,or checked for Coci

Can anyone tell me what exactly a Chinese Imperial dog is? Is it a small shih tzu?

Friday, August 15th, 2008

I have tried to research it myself and all I kept on finding were sites on "small shih tzu".. Are they shih tzus or a different breed?
Thank you all very much
I found this "breed" of dog on dogbreedinfo.com You can see some pics there

There is no such breed as a Chinese Imperial dog. People may do a "sales pitch" and call certain dogs a name like that. I have heard of small Pekingese called "Imperial Pekingese"….also Standard (large) Poodles called "Royal Poodles". It's what I call a "street name".

i'm getting an imperial shih tzu?

Friday, August 15th, 2008

say NOTHING of what kind of dog i'm getting!

i was wondering if there is any special things my puupy will need… i have 2 dogs but they are 4-6 YEARS away from a puppy so i haven't really remembered how to keep puppies healthy (besides vet care)
what i men by healthy is contempt

Crate definitely for starters. He (and your other dogs) needs a space of his own.

http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/cratetraining.htm

Sturdy leash and collar or harness.
His own food bowl, (feed him in the crate to help prevent problems)
Extra water bowl would not be a bad idea either.
Some old towels for in the crate.
Toys – nylabone for chewing.
Quality dog food like Canidae.
Lots of love and affection.
Keep him separate from the other dogs (with crates, baby gates) until they adjust to him, they may gang up on him. A neutral meeting ground is always a good idea. (a park, at the very least walk them around the block together, then bring him in last)
Be sure and get new toys / treats for the others as well.

imperial shih-tzu?

Friday, August 15th, 2008

I was thinking of getting one.
Are they a good breed? are they high maitenance? Are they unhealthy? Should I get one? Do you have one?

thanks ?

I have one I rescued from a puppy mill. She is all the wonderful things a dog can be and should be, but she isn't a breed I'm normally drawn too. She's very much the prima dona or diva, but she's so darned cute, especially when she's taking the toy basket into the back yard or getting out a toy bigger than she is.

Although they are high maintenance because of their hair. And you have to be careful because they have a tendency to have bad teeth.

Think long and hard because like most small dogs they can literally live forever. You are making a long time commitment.

The good news is thy don't shed as much as other dogs and they have very little dander, so they are more hypo-allergenic than most breeds.
