Dog snoring…?

Sunday, August 17th, 2008

Anyone have experience with successfully getting a dog to stop snoring? I have a 3 year old Imperial Shih Tzu, and though I know it is a character of the breed, she only started doing this a month or so ago. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I would hate to have to kennel her at night, because she keeps everyone awake!
I know it's part of their trait, I just don't understand why for 3 years she didn't do it, and just now she's started to…

Learn to sleep through it, or have him sleep somewhere else.

My wife just takes a sleeping pill every night so she can sleep through the snoring from our rottie mix.

what kind of dog should i get?

Sunday, August 17th, 2008

i need a small dog we are thinking of an imperial shih tzu (don't say asnything about this dog breed) NO chinease cresteds my mom doesn't like them
i already have 2 dogs at home a mediumlargeish sized dog and a small dog
i asked my mother and she said i might be able to go to our local shelter and get a dog but please keep posting and if so please post any websites that you know of

i want a playful hyper dog

try looking at the dogs at the shelters. they always get in pure and mix small breed dogs. You might be able to find what you are looking for at the shelter. you can also look at

www.petfinder.com

there are thousands of dogs looking for good homes. As of the breed I would try a shith tzu, chih, or maybe an small terrier mix type of dog.

Is an imerpial shih tzu worth $2000????

Sunday, August 17th, 2008

Me and my husband are planning to get an imperial for $2000, do you guys think it's worth that much????

no
And I bred shih tzus for over ten years, so I would tell you if it was worth it.

The teacup/mini/pocket/imperial varieties of pets die easily. They do exist, but I know they die easily. I get about one or two calls a week wanting a chihuahua puppy because someone had a tc from another breeder that died. It is the most common story that I hear from people who want a puppy. Everyone wants very small dogs, but it comes at a price in health. Not all of them are healthy at this point in time. And I would never pay $2000 for one. I just wouldn't do it.

My 5 month old puppy tinkles whenever he gets excited?

Saturday, August 16th, 2008

I have noticed every time my 5 month old imperial shih-tzu gets excited she tinkles. I had her in the dog run today for a few hours to run and play and when I went out to get her to bring her in she was excited, jumping up and down, and when I picked her up she tinkles. Not alot, just a few drops. When I get off of work at midnight and go and get her out of her crate to play with her when I open the crate, she will come out wagging her tail and she will tinkle a few drops. Why does she do this. I have never had a dog that does that.

Its called excitement urination. The dogs dont even know they are doing it. It is just they get so excited that the tinkle a bit. You little one is still a pup so hopefully she will grow out of it. You may also try to let her calm down a bit before you touch her or try to pick her up.

We have 2 female dogs who wont stop fighting, any ideas on how to stop them?

Saturday, August 16th, 2008

Gizmo is a Imperial Shih tzu and Polly is a Maltese, they have lived together for 6 + years and just started this about 4 months ago. I've had to take polly to the vet bc Gizmo hurt her leg. Polly is my dog and Gizmo is my dad's dog. I think they're jealous of each other but I don't know what to do to stop them. I've tried yelling at them and giving them both whippings and put in their crates but when they get out they go right back at each other. Its getting so bad that I have to pick up Polly to take her from my room to outside to go to the bathroom so Giz won't attack her. Any help would be greatly appreciated :D
My sister also has a male pug who is about 7 months old, he is not neutered yet but both of the girls are spayed. Gizmo is 8 yrs old and Polly is 7, Gizmo was in the house by herself for a year before we got polly

Hi Tiffy!!
This is a very volatile sitution that needs to be seriously addressed.

The jealous of the fight you describe, has not come unexpectedly, because there has been a history of between the younger and older females for some time. I am not surprised that their level of competition has escalated and will continue to do so until the senior female completely defers to the younger one. There is a struggle going on for a new pack leader and it is taking a dangerous turn.

It is advisable that at the onset of any sign of aggression, all possible medical causes are ruled out. BEFORE you consult a trainer.

If an injury, disease or genetic congenital defect, is deemed the cause of the dog's mood swings or aggression, then no training will be effective until the problem has been resolved or controlled.

There are many conditions that can cause unusual or aggressive behavior in dogs. Anything from problems with teeth and eyesight to joint pain.

Visit to vet important BEFORE you consult a trainer.

Why am I still allergic to my hypoallergenic puppy???

Saturday, August 16th, 2008

My Imperial Shih Tzu is 9 wks old. I have read that they do not shed dander so they are hypoallergenic. However, I'm still suffering from runny nose, itchy eyes and congestion. I love my new puppy dearly and don't want to give her up. Please if anyone knows some other options I mightn have to manage this problem (other than giving up my puppy) I would much appreciate it.

A hypoallergenic dog does not meet that the dog is non allergenic. All dogs can cause allergies, although it is true that single coated dogs produce less allergens then double coated dogs.

There are some avoidance measures you can do: wash the dog weekly, vacuum weekly, minimize carpet.

Allergy shots is a great way to minimize dog allergies, but it is time consuming and has some small risk of allergic reactions. Watch out for unproven, non scientific based treatments that don't work and end up depleting your bank account. Remember, Rome wasn't built in 1 day; don't expect miracles; things that sound too good to be true are just that.

imperial shih-tzus?

Saturday, August 16th, 2008

I was wondering… Are imperials healthy? Do they have hypoglocemia? Will they need extra care (more than that of a reg. shih-tzu)? Are they easy to housetrain? Are they good pets to have?

Many dogs bred to be 'teacup' size (which is a practice looked down apon my RESPONSIBLE BREEDERS) have extensive health problems…. Smaller dogs have smaller bladders, so house training is more extensive…

I don't recommend a 'teacup' anything to anyone..do not encourage these unethical breeders.

FACTS ABOUT “IMPERIAL”
OR “TEACUP” SHIH TZU
The words “imperial” and “tiny teacup” are sometimes used interchangeably to describe undersized Shih Tzu. In fact, the terms “imperial” or “tiny teacup” should be regarded as what they really are….A MYTH often used by unethical breeders to create a market for dogs that do not conform to the breed standard. These tiny dogs are NOT what the Shih Tzu has been since it was developed as a distinctive breed in China ’s imperial palace, nor what it ought to be.

Maybe you read an ad in your local newspaper, searched the Internet, or know of someone who acquired a Shih Tzu using the words “imperial” or “tiny teacup” to describe how unusual and special (and even more expensive?) their dog might be. The official breed standard approved by the American Kennel Club (AKC) and the American Shih Tzu Club (ASTC) calls for a weight range of 9 to 16 pounds.

A breed standard is a written description of the ideal dog of a particular breed by which it is bred and judged at dog shows. Breed standards are used by all canine organizations. The first written standard for Shih Tzu was that of the Peking Kennel Club, in 1938, which stated that the ideal weight for Shih Tzu was 10 to 15 pounds. Today, Shih Tzu breed standards approved by purebred dog registries around the world are very similar to the 1938 Peking Kennel Club standard. They recognize that one of the distinguishing characteristics of the Shih Tzu is that it is not a fragile dog. It is very solid and sturdy despite its relatively compact size.

Why would anyone want to steer away from the weight called for in the AKC-approved breed standard or to call the breed by anything but its AKC-recognized name? Could it be a fad they have created in order to obtain a higher price for a dog that does not meet the breed standard? These particular breeders have deliberately downsized an already designated Toy breed. By doing this, they risk the overall health and wonderful distinguishing breed characteristics that responsible breeders have worked long and hard to preserve. The same is true of “breeders” who deliberately cross-breed two different AKC-recognized breeds to create what they call “designer dogs.”

Many of the less than reputable breeders of undersized Shih Tzu claim that their Shih Tzu possess the “imperial” gene. There is no proof that such a gene exists. Size reduction occurs by breeding the smallest dog in a litter to another small dog of another litter, and so on and so forth. This not only creates abnormally small Shih Tzu, but also puppies that may have health problems. This is not indicative of an “imperial gene,” but rather of poor breeding practices.

A responsible breeder does not advertise an occasional “runt” as an “imperial” or “tiny teacup” Shih Tzu. Rather, it is sold as a pet, solely as a companion dog that is not to be used for breeding. Responsible breeders strive to breed healthy dogs that conform to the breed standard. The ideal Shih Tzu is a sturdy, active, healthy dog with good substance for its size. Those desiring a very tiny pet should choose another breed rather than destroying the very characteristics that make the Shih Tzu such an ideal companion.

There is no such thing as an AKC-recognized Imperial or Tiny Teacup Shih Tzu. Any domestic registry other than the American Kennel Club is not recognized by the American Shih Tzu Club. Breeders using alternative registries may have lost their AKC registration and breeding privileges for various reasons.

For More Information

This web site (www.shihtzu.org) is a good place to begin or continue your research on our breed or to find out how to locate a responsible breeder through the club’s breeder referral service. As you search the web, however, be wary of well-designed web sites with appealing photos that may lead you to the very breeders you should avoid. Puppy-selling web sites are often nothing more than glorified marketing sources commercial breeders use to reach the uninitiated. It is sometimes difficult even for those aware of the dangers of pet shops and puppy mills to discriminate between the various web sites and determine which are maintained by ethical breeders, so be sure to do your homework.

Shih Tzu or Shih Chon??

Saturday, August 16th, 2008

So I'm thinking of getting a tiny toy puppy and have been wanting a Shih-Tzu (imperial) but recently I have seen pics of Shih Chon which I think are breeded with Bichon if im correct? Anyways those dogs are cute too and I really want to kno which type is better with terms of which one is smaller as an adult? Ive seen pic of shih tzu adults and dont want one that grows to be big but heard the imperial breed are smaller….anywho which one???

Bichon can be quite a bit larger than Pure Shih Tzus. Besides, why pay for someones experiments when you could get a purebred with real AKC papers? The only problem I have with AKC breeders is that they can put a limited registration on your puppy which I feel is a bunch of B.S., UNLESS the puppy has some deformity.

Even if I intended to spay the dog I wouldn't give 2 cents for any dog with AKC limited registration. Ask the breeder which type of registration they are offering and pass on anything limited.

No breeder will ever admit it but the ones who 'mark off' dogs as limited are the ones who help create all these nutty designer dog breeders going crazy breeding anything to everything out there.
