She is a 7 pound imperial shih tzu and I have had her since she was just a baby. She is so spoiled and comfortable with me and she is SO attatched to me. I KNOW she is not afraid of me because she hardly EVER minds me (my dad says I never taught her that I am the “pack leader”, ha). This is why it makes absolutely no sense why most of the time when I bend down to pick her up, she stomps and plays and runs around in circles and backs up–basically it’s like she thinks it’s a joke or something?
She jumps into my lap all of the time and loves to be held and cuddled, but for some reason when I go to pick her up she thinks it’s funny or something. And other times she will jump and sass like she wants me to get her, but when I start to, she backs away. I guess in cases like this she is trying to play, but even when she isn’t sassy she will back up from me. I know that there is no possible way she is scared of me or uncomfortable with me, so why is she like this?
She knows she is a dog and not a baby…….clever dog!
Imperial Shih Tzu
Why won’t my dog hardly ever let me pick her up?
Thursday, November 6th, 2008How risky is it to get a small dog spayed?
Tuesday, November 4th, 2008I am getting a small Shih Tzu this week! I am so excited!
Her parents are small (NO I am not going to say she is ‘Imperial Shih Tzu’ lol because there is NO such thing!)
She will probably not get to be bigger than 10 pounds…
Will it be risky to get her spayed?
If your vet is competent and you get her pre-operative bloodwork done then it is not any more risky than spaying a larger dog. I work for a vet and we spay dogs under 10lbs all the time and have never had more of a problem with them than with larger dogs. For some particularly small dogs (like a 2lb chihuahua) we might add some dextrose to their IV fluids in order to keep their blood sugar from dropping too low, but beyond that we don’t do anything differently than we would for a larger dog.
What is the cost of a shih tzu puppy?
Sunday, November 2nd, 2008My parents, brother and I are planning to buy a shih tzu puppy.
Just to make sure how much we could pay for a shih tzu puppy, what is the average price for a shih tzu puppy?
And, is there such thing as an imperial shih tzu puppy?
Thanks! ![]()
The breed was considered ‘imperial’ but right now it’s just one breed of dog.
Since small dog prices are incredibly inflated (you’re paying show quality price for pet quality dogs) I’d say check first with the breed rescues, as they are looking for homes for the dogs in their care and the price will be far lower than the $300-$800 market costs.
And with humane societies and animal shelters seeing 60% of their intake dogs being purebreds, you can usually put your name in with them to call you when one of a particular breed is brought in for adoption. Then you’d only be paying the cost of the adoption fee and the dog would have been vet checked plus be up to date on it’s shots.
Puppy training question?
Wednesday, October 15th, 2008Hi- Thanks for checking out my question =)
My husband and I just bought a Shih Tzu puppy. He is four weeks old and we will be taking him home in a month. I have two questions:
1) We live in a luxury high rise on the fourteenth floor. I’m a little apprehensive re: house training Fenway (his name). Does anyone have any advice on house training a puppy when you live in an apartment with no immediate access to outside?
2) My husband has a bearded dragon lizard that mostly stays in his tank. I’m wondering if they will get a long. Fenway is tiny (he’s only going to weigh in at about 7 lbs, he is an imperial Shih Tzu). I’m wondering if I should allow them to interact, or keep them separate?
The apartment is very large, around 1200 square feet so it wouldn’t be a problem to keep them separate.
Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks!
So far these answers are awesome. Thanks so much!
Congrats on the new member!
1) You can try making an area in your apartment for his potty. Like place a puppy pad in the bathroom or a room you don’t enter and let him see it and sniff around where it is. Like make sure there’s a designated spot for him. Don’t just give up or think there’s nothing else to do so you put a diaper on him or think I’ll just suck it up and clean it up. Also, when he first arrives expect him to mark his territory.
2) Well, since the dog is a brand new pup and has never been exposed to much if you have im meet the lizard now they’ll get along good. Make sure his meeting with the lizard is good and he is not doing anything bad. You don’t want him jumping on the lizard to be a habit. Make sure whenever they are in contact you’re watching %100 of the time. No exceptions.
Remember those first 3-4 months of your puppies life is so important with socializing him. So start asking around for puppy play groups and friends who have dogs. Make sure it’s okay with your vet when he doesn’t have all his shots yet though.

Can you feel puppies in a pregnant dogs belly after 31 days?? Is it possible not to feel anything at this time
Sunday, August 17th, 2008Could it be possible the pups are up higher in her rib area??? ..We were told this dog was pregnant when we purchased her…with a due date of October 12 but i am thinking the saler could have lied to us! Extra info it is a Shih Tzu dog. i have a smaller shih tzu that has had a puppy and we could feel little golf ball sized pups at a certain point but this is a bigger Shihtzu (the standard kind not imperial like my other dog)
Umm for the rude person…I didnt lie I own TWO shih tzus dogs…….one smaller breed…and this is a standard bigger dog anyway..that is also a Shih Tzu..people can have two of the same breeds ya know!!! And I have only had a dog have pups twice in my whole life so I consider myself new to this…..my other small shih tzu only had one pup each time! and sorry typo earlier i meant the seller/kennel i bought this new shih tzu from may have lied to me…but I may be wrong she may end up being pregnant. I look forward to having some pups…an addition to our growing family! ![]()
So if she is supposedly due Oct 12, how far is she now? 4 weeks or so? She won't even show until almost six weeks, movement at 7 weeks and strong movement at 8weeks delivery at nine weeks. Most people aren't even sure of a pregnancy until almost 6 weeks along.
i'm getting a puppy?
Sunday, August 17th, 2008on may 14th it is an imperial shihtzu named tucker… any tips on these dogs? don't say they don't exsist they are just mini shih-tzu i know… i also know they have likley chances of heart problems etc… my father is a dog expert and we are willing to get the dog vet treatment
because we know what we are doing we have another dog that is likely to heath issues just not as severe… we have the money for all that kind of stuff
we ALWAYS get our dogs checked out 1-5 days after we get them and go in for yearly heath checks… we are responsible dog owners who love our dogs very much
my parents won't buy anything else they say mutts are too big… for pete sake they said a dauchsund was too big and i already have one
I'm not sure your question is clear but my mom had a shihtzu (who passed away this past christmas) who had tons of eye problems which the vet said is very common in the breed. so that would be something I would suggest you have checked regularly. He had to have several surgeries and I believev his eye popped out once or twice.Even with the problems, she still wants to get another shihtzu. Enjoy your puppy, you sound like you just want to make sure he's being taken care of.
Small Dog and Litter Box?
Sunday, August 17th, 2008I’m getting a small puppy…About the size of a cat…adn it’s goign to stay t he suze of a cat cuz it’s ganna be a small breed (Pomeranian, Pappillon, Imperial Shih tzu, etc.) and I was wondering… Can I use a litter box for it? Or will the cat litter harm her? I want her to use a litter box so she doesn’t have to go outside all the time and won’t have a greater chance of gettign attacked by our bigger dog, or one of the loose neighborhood dogs…So Will the litter harm her?
Well I have time to take it outside, I just dont' want anythign to happen to her cuz she will be so small. And our bigger dog likes to chase Swuirrells and small rodents and cats… So I dont' want her to get confused with the small dog.
Yes the big dog DOES get along wiht other dogs. I'm goign to take it for walks… The thing is I know the small dog will be safe Cuz the big dog stays outdoors and the little one will stay indoors. I'm going to take her for walks so she will get excersize… and I'm goign to try to get them to get along.. It's just going to take some time…
I had my 2 Chihuahuas litter box trained years ago. They knew to go to the door to alert me if I was home. If I wasn't, they would use the litter box. It never hurt them. However, I did see that there is such a thing as Dog Litter now.

Funny how my answer is the only one w/ a TD. Interesting.
How to get Rid of Fleas?
Sunday, August 17th, 2008I wasnt sure of how to name the title but if you can help me out that would be GREAT :] I have an 11weeks old imperial shih tzu and we took him to the vet to get checked and flea medicine (Advantage) to be put on him. Ever since i got him hes been indoors, bhut even though he got the flea medication on him, hes been itching/scratching himself by the ear/ cheek, and sometimes body, licking his paws and nibbling on his legs (at times, not alot). Does that mean the medicine doesnt work or is it allergies? What can it be? I feed him Eukanuba. Can it be from the food or the fleas? Please Help!
…see your Vet and then also get some Boric-Acid powder. sprinkle it in the rugs…everewhere…even on the pooch… it's a natural power that will send the fleas running.
Mutts vs Purebred health issues?
Sunday, August 17th, 2008I bought a dog from a co-workers mother, whom I absolutely trusted. The dog was not papered, but she assured me it was a purebred shih-tzu. They gave me pictures of the father, etc. I took a training class, and to my surprise, my puppy's mother and brother were there. That's when I found out that her dad is an "Imperial Shih-Tzu." I looked up this interesting term….. My puppy is a mutt from a runt!!!
Well, almost a year later, my puppy has hip dysplasia, which I was told was genetic. (I contacted my co-worker, who says her mom's dog has been recently fixed.)
My question– I think from now on I'd rather buy an AKC registered dog for health reasons. My husband says mutts are healthier and live longer because they are not INBRED like purebreds.
A professionally bred registered dog should be healthier, right?
~not against mutts, but I don't think I could deal with another new puppy knowing s/he has health problems and will only live 5-7 years!!!
~my dog was spayed, that's how we found out she has a genetic health problem.
Wow, these are all such great answers, I can't choose a best!
The CKC or AKC doesn't have standard for the quality. So you could be buying a registered pure bred and the dog could have health problems. The key is to look for a breeder who will give you a written health guarentee on the puppy preferably for atleast 5 years. Also health and genetic screening should be done on the parents and grandparents. Mutts inherit the hereditory defects from both Lines…ex. German Shepherd/Australian Shepherd Mix….The German Shepherd is known for blood disorders, epilepsy, dysplasia. Australian Shepherds are known for blindness, deafness, mylopthethy, dysplasia, liver problems…..so your puppy can inherit any of these defects. Plus you do not know the lineage from the parents or grandparents….
If you get a Pure bred dog with a health guarentee from a reputable breeder you will know what bloodlines run in the genes, you can see a health certificate/screening form for atleast 3-5 generations.
Goodluck
