I adopted "Frankie" (even though I call him Bubba) last weekend. The lady that we adopted him from told us that he is pure bred shih tzu and nothing else. I think he's mixed because his legs and torso are longer than the shih tzus that I've seen. I have a picture of him here…. http://www.flickr.com/photos/tom_carla/2474154351/
he has his "summer haircut" in that picture, I haven't seen him with long hair yet. Anyway, can someone let me know if I'm right or wrong about this please.
oops…my bad, i thought that they only had short legs. thanks!
I have a shih tzu and he looks like a purebred.
Haircuts For Shih Tzu
What breed is mixed in with my shih-tzu?
Thursday, August 14th, 2008Is the “teddybear cut” a good haircut for a shih-tzu?
Thursday, August 14th, 2008I just want my shih-tzu to feel as comfy as possible esp. with the weather here. Also, I have a problem dealing with matting (this is why I keep his hair short, not the “show” type style)…I don’t know how other people do it. I was told to brush him everyday, but he is always likes to roll around the woods, when he comes back his hair gets easily stuck together.
This is a very sweet and easy to care for cut.I’m sure you’ll like the looks and the dog will appreciate not having to be picked at everyday.
How Much Is Grooming for a 1yr. shih tzu? ( Petco, petsmart)?
Thursday, August 14th, 2008Is IT Worth it? I mean i know they need to be groomed. but my dog needs a haircut. Have u had good expieriences there? or would a small dog business be worth the money?
I used to work at Petsmart, and I would not suggest you go there. It's very stressful, there are too many dogs (up to 100 at a time in our shop's kennel) and too many groomers, it gets very confusing and stressful and potentially dangerous. The average price around here for a Shih Tzu at those places is about $55 for a very basic package. Private salons charge a little less, at least around here. I would find a small private salon, they generally have better groomers and a better atmosphere for the dog.

Thursday, August 14th, 2008Shih Tzu haircut??
Wednesday, August 13th, 2008My six month old Shih Tzu Mog is getting groomed tomorrow. I can't decide how to get his hair cut. Here is a picture of him now:
I can't decide between just trimming it up and leaving it kind of long like this:
http://www.panorama-family.de/bilder/0030_steckbrief_kalender_shihtzu.jpg
Or cutting off the length so it looks something like this:

Grooming isn't an issue. We're in the habit of brushing him every day.
I always hate the third cut on Shih Tzus… Just the face seems really weird. Your guy sure is cute now, though! I'd say go with the second one. I also don't like the bow they always put on them to keep the hair from their eyes, but it sure is better than #3. Could the top hair be cut like in the third so the tie wouldn't be needed?
My Shih Tzu/Chihuahua cross has only had one haircut so far. He had a puppy cut, but the face turned out like the third one, so I took picked up a home scissor and butchered it to my imperfect delight.
When it's not symmetrical, it looks natural on a dog.
You could always pick up a home grooming kit and mess around with him yourself! Good luck!

Sunday, August 3rd, 2008How long does it take for a Shih Tzu's hair to grow back?
Sunday, August 3rd, 2008My 7 month old Shih Tzu Sammy went in for a haircut. I told them that I wanted it barely touched. when I returned to pick him up, he was no longer a little fluffy puppy. I'm really sad about it, but of course love him as much as ever. He doesn't even look like the same little fur ball. Sigh…does anyone know how long it would take for his hair to grow back to what it was? He looked like a little bear before, now more like a poodle.
i have 3 shih tzus and they are clipped all year round,i clip them my self and i always take all there coat off and leave them with very little hair.
mine need clipping every 6 weeks because the hair does grow back quickly within the 6 weeks they look like fluffy dogs.
one thing i will say is when you clip a shih zus coat it Will not grow back like it was,i don't know why but my dogs used to have long flowing coats before i clipped them and now when i let it grow back they look like sheep.
