Please help…… My dog won't eat?

Friday, August 15th, 2008

I have a 4 1/2 month old male Shih tzu named Conner and he didn't want to eat this morning. He is teething so could it be from that?

I've been feeding him Bil-Jac (which is what the breeder had him eating and she told us to keep feeding him that until August). The Vet wants us to gradually switch him over to Science Diet so we've been feeding Conner a mixture of Bil-Jac and the Science Diet. He seems to like the Science Diet more than the Bil-Jac. This morning when I tried to feed Conner he just sniffed at the food and then walked away.

He's also been scratching at his nose, mouth, and face alot (I noticed that this morning). He'll rub his face on the carpet to scratch. He does need a haircut cause he does have alot of hair around his face (he will be getting a cut tomorrow). Could the scratching be caused by needing a haircut?

What could be the reason for not wanting to eat

Excuse margaret for being a moron. Both foods are perfectly fine, and will not harm your dog in anyway when coupled with exercise. As for the problem. She honestly may not be hungry, or may have a little bit of an upset stomach. You might wanna try feeding him a little later in the day. Some dogs do get bored of certain foods, and trust me if your dog was allergic to the food.. It wouldn't be smart enough to stop eating it.

As for the rubbing on the gruond, I'm assuming you have him on a flea protection? If not, then that would most likely be it. Otherwise, my dog does that when they get hair in their eyes, and it could be because of needing the haircut, yes.

HELP! My dog…?

Friday, August 15th, 2008

I had my little 1 year old Shih Tzu groomed earlier on today. Now, I specifically asked for them not to shave his genitals as he REALLY doesn't like it, I mean to the point where he mopes around for a week, crying like a baby. They haven't done it in previous haircuts, so they obviously know the routine. But I still make sure they know every single time. They are really helpful and nice, and he always boalts to go inside when we pass by.

But today, as I was walking him home from the store, I noticed he kept sitting down to lick himself and that he wasn't carrying his tail right. I looked at him, and saw that he had 2 large razor burns on his penis. I called and the man apologized and said that the groomer claimed that they didn't shave him.

Now my poor dog pays for their mistake. He's writhing on the floor in pain, and I don't know what to do! Please help me. What should I put on the razor burns? Should I bring him to the vet tomorrow? What can I do to help? Thanks so much!

If he was groomed at a large Pet Store's grooming facility, take your dog in- in the morning and ask to speak with the store director. Show him your dog. They will likely refund your grooming and have the dog treated at their in-store Vet.
There's no excuse for razor burn whether you requested them not to shave there or you didn't request it.
That groomer is a danger to dogs. No excuse! Some managers not familiar with grooming may not know how to handle this situation. That's why I suggest you talk to the store director if it was at a large store.
Find a good groomer- get one of the experienced ones at the shop with good referrals and request only that one to groom your dog or go somewhere else for grooming.
If it was an individual grooming facility, you can can talk to the owner but they may pay for a vet visit or deny you. In that case, it may be more of a pain to take it to small claims court, but if you wanted to you could. Take photos, take the dog to the Vet, get a Vet statement and take the groomer to court. OR just get another groomer and chalk it up to experience. The groomer or store should pay. DEFINITELY take him to the Vet tomorrow if it is badly irritated.

why does my dog keep barking?

Friday, August 15th, 2008

my dog is a poodle/shih-tzu mix, 12 years old. we just brought him home from the vet today (haircut, physical, etc.) and ever since he's been home, he just keeps barking and barking! we keep him in the basement because he has accidents all over the house. anyway, whenever we go down there, we go, "what's wrong, boy, what's wrong? what are you barking at?" i was just down there and i concluded that all he wants is Milk-Bones! (if you don't know what those are, they're just doggy treats). i mean, yeah, i know he loves them and all, but he keep barking! he's been barking the whole time i've been typing this! he doesn't want outside, he has plenty of food/water, there's no windows he can see out of (they're too high).my cat was down there, so i brought him up because i thought maybe my cat was bothering him, but he's still barking even when the cat is up. they had to sedate him for his haircut and the drug just wore off like, an hour ago. could the drug have anything to do with it? help?!
p.s.-i gave him a few, but i know that he shouldn't have a lot, so i only gave him like, 2-3 and then i just stopped cuz he doesn't need anymore. right?
p.s.s.-i know it's not fair to keep him downstairs and i keep trying to convince my parents to let him come upstairs. but anyway, it's not my choice and he's been in the basement for like 2 years. and our basement isn't cold, dingy, creepy, etc. it's fully furnished and livable, it's like a huge living room. (it's big, like…big. lol. like, picture a professional tennis court. something like that. lol)

Because he doesn't like to be trapped all alone in the scary basement… he's probably scared and feels abandoned. House train him then bring him upstairs!

can you explain this?

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

I have a Shih Tzu, and every time he gets a haircut he goes into a blue funk for up to a week. He curls up on kitchen chairs that are pushed in, or anyother place he can hide. I have to practactly force him to go outside. and doesn't want to play. I don't explain why he does this. what do you think?
I grom my dog myself.
I goom him with clippers, not scissors.
The cliperes are not loud, and I soothe and praise him through the whole process.
plus he gets a treat after he's groomed
My sister thinks he's embarressed about not having his fur.

Maybe he suffers from separation anxiety and absolutely hates being somewhere with out you. To top it off there's this strange person grooming him and maybe he just hates the whole experience.

Also maybe you can try a different place. Maybe someone is mean with him there- you never know…

Sounds like Separation Anxiety and not liking to be groomed by a stranger.

My Shih Tzu gets groomed monthly and always comes back kinda funny too. Like I abandoned him and wasn't coming back. Like I left him on the operating table alone. He's very particular about his eyes because they are extremely sensitive. I usually wipe the funk from his eyes 3 times a day but specifically when he comes back from the groomers he won't let me touch him there and he snarls but without the growling. My Shih Tzu is a quiet one. Feed him treats before and after that day and praise him all day long. Show him it's a good and exciting thing.

Tipping Etiquette?

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

I am not sure if I need to tip the following and if I do – how much?…..my shih tzu's groomer – when I take her for a haircut…and I go to a P.U.S.H. therapy lady (massage) every other week – I am supposed to tip every time?….also – what about when I go to get acupunture?…should I tip?

You do exactly what your feelings telll you. These places are usually classy enough to make you notice there is a dish where money is laid out and advice to tip if you are happy with the work. Do what you like. Tipping should be banned because the workforce are not paid a decent wage, and have to really demean themselves by augmenting their pittance and depend on tippers. Its disgusting. But you have plenty of money so distribute a bit of wealth to your servants.

Dog groomer in Shanghai?

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

Hello, I haven't really had any luck looking for one online, the ones I've found don't seem to exist. Anyways, I have a shih tzu who badly needs a haircut. I live in Jingan, but can go anywhere within a reasonable distance (ie within the number 4 belt and in puxi). And about how much should it cost. Thanks!

I have lived in Shanghai for about wo months and I have only found groomers in the Ginqiao, Pudong area.

Is my shih tzu sick?

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

My family and I thinks she is, or it just might be some kind of reaction… Here is what is happening:

Her ear keeps moving as if she is being tickled there.
She's shivering/shaking
She keeps scratching.. ( she has flea protection on! )
She refuses to move
When she walks she'll immediately sit down ( sometimes sitting down to scratch)

Note: It started after she got groomed and a haircut.
There are petechia spots on some areas. ( little red bump spots)

we do think she is sick, today we are probably going to call her doctor if she still feels the same.

Does anyone probably knows whats wrong with her? I mean she eats a bit, and we have to bring the bowl of water to her because she doesn't get up to get water.
My mom thinks another dog did something, but she can't be pregnant I think.. well.. she got neutered.

maybe she hates the new cut.
take her to the vet!

my shih tzu's skin problems?

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

apparently my shih tzu has sensitive skin. the vet said she is allergic to fleas. and she always (even in winter) has scabs various places. every time we take her for a haircut the vet puts her on meds for a staph infection. we even trim her hair and home, and she gets baths pretty regularly. anyone else having same problems?

If your dog is allergic to fleas, the only way you will solve the problem is to eradicate fleas in your home and on your dog. Just one flea bite can cause a full bodied reaction. Continued exposure risks anaphylaxis, and systemic infection.

I recommend Frontline Plus EVERY 4 weeks, without fail. Board her for a day and bug-bomb your house, because even with the Frontline there are still fleas attempting to feed on your dog (although they will die, it's faster and risks less allergic reaction if they don't have the chance).

HELP! My 1yr old female shih tzu, she hasnt been acting herself ever since she got all her hair cut days ago?

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

I need help because my 1year old female shih tzu just got her very first hair cut on saturday ( which is 2days from today). the groomer had to shave all her hair off because it was all tangled up. when i picked her up from the groomer place, she's been acting weird, not herself ever since the haircut. usually shes very active, she would play with her toys, when i tell her who's at the door she would run by the door, when i tell her to go up the stairs she would. Now she doesnt do all that, now she would just sit in one spot for hours..biting her tail, licking her paws ect. and i see her shaking, so i put her clothes on her. I dont know if its cause shes ON HEAT right now, i dont know if its cause of her hair cut now that shes bald and not use to it.

im really worried, HELP HELP PLEASEEEEE!

THANKS.

I had my dog shaved about 3 weeks ago. He was really lethargic too after the shave. He kept licking himself. Then I notice a patch of hair was gone. I thought it was because he had been licking so much. Turned out to be ringworm, the patch of hair that missing was round, about the size of a softball!! It might have been from dirty clippers. Ringworm is a fungus. The vet has pills to treat ringworm. I treated my dog with a anti-fungal spray from Walgreens.
