Out of these, which should I get?

A Chocolate lab named Hazel (Short for hazelnut)

A white Shih Tzu named Snow

A Yorkie named Mocha

Or a Boxer named Roxxane

Feel free to suggest differnt names. Not a different breed.

Please first be sure you will be able to take care of a dog. The ASPCA Complete Guide to Dogs is a wonderful place to find out if you are.

Want a high-energy dog because you're an athlete, with a lot of loyalty and friendliness mixed in? A Lab is for you.

Want a small dog, though you will have to put up with a lot of grooming? You can try a Shih Tzu or a Yorkie.

Want a high-energy dog because you're an athlete, with a healthy amount of loyalty plus quite a bit of protectiveness blended in? A boxer is a great choice!

And once you've made your choice, visit petfinder.com to pick your pet, or check out local shelters.

I've heard that in Southern California, having a dog on heart worm prevention medicine is not necessary?

Monday, August 18th, 2008

I just want to make sure that it's true. I don't want to medicate my dog (a one year old Shih Tzu) if it's not necessary. Heartworm supposedly is the most dangerous in dogs? Currently my dog has been tested free of worms. Is an annual test enough? Or is it better just to give him heartguard or sentinel forever? Which brand is better and are there some less chemical alternatives?

~I live in So Cal. and this year our vet has had us start using heart gaurd. Heart worms have been found in ventura, riverside and san diego counties. I live in Los Angeles County. He said at this point of time since there has been reported cases in all surrounding counties it is just a matter of time. He has been our vet for 13 years and is just now becomming concerned. So I took His advice. He recommened using revuliotion every 6-8 weeks instead of the normal 4 week dose. He said that is what he started on his own personal pets also.

Also mosquitos are the carriers of the heart worm larve. And As a lifetime So Cal resident. I have noticed the last few years more of a mosquito problem than in the past.

When do I know my pup is ok to be left in a room alone uncrated?

Monday, August 18th, 2008

6 mo old Shih Tzu, trained to potty outside, though will have an accident occasionally. He has his own room and it would be nice if he could be in there all day while I'm at work uncrated. I just dont want to come home to a floor toilet!! What age did you let your crate trained dog run free during the day?

Could be up to 18 months before you can leave them out all day. If yours is still having occasional accidents, then he is still to young to be left out.

What you need to do is test him on weekends when you don't work. Leave him out while you go for a short walk. Next time, go for about a hour. Slowly work the time up that you are gone. That way you know how long you can trust him.

What is normal weight and amount of food for an 8-1/2 mo old Shih Tzu?

Monday, August 18th, 2008

Charlie has weighed 13 lbs for the past two months. Recently, he became ravenous and his food is gone by 11 AM – AND he's gained 2 lbs. He gets about 1-1/4 cups of dry food and free feeds. Am concerned about his health and getting too heavy. Also, my climate is cold so he isn't getting as much exercise tho I play with him inside and let him race around quite a bit. As an aside, I never thought he would be this big; the mother was 8 lbs and the male 14. HELP, would sure appreciate your ideas. I'm stumped. Thx. Kathy

well, i have a 5 yr old shih tzu and he weighs 12lbs the vet said that was a perfectly normal weight so he may be overweight and i feed my dog canned food and 2 cans per day vet also said was fine
hope i helped!

does anybody out there have free or cheap puppy to give away?

Monday, August 18th, 2008

is anybody willing to ship or drive it out unless u live in sacromento i can drive out and get it.Any gender but has to be a small dog breed [pomeranian,Chihuahua, lhasa aspo,
Shih Tzu]and any other small breed.thanx

If you're concerned about cost, you might want to rethink getting a dog. Having a dog, especially a puppy, is VERY expensive. You have the cost of vet visits, shots, spaying/neutering, heartworm and flea preventatives — and those are just if the puppy is healthy! Then there is food, leashes and collars, toys, treats and training classes Plus, what if something were to go wrong? Would you be able to afford an emergency?

If you are dead set on getting a dog, go to a shelter. There are plenty of cute puppies that need homes and shelters will usually charge a minimal fee that covers the pups veterinary care that they receive.

Check out http://www.petfinder.com and you'll be able to search specifically for small breed puppies.

HELP,HELP i have a 6 month shih tzu and?

Monday, August 18th, 2008

am at my witts!! i got him about 8 weeks and i have worked with him all the time with potty training, to this day he goes out every hour okay he gets rewared i tell him how good he is i acted super happy when he goes outside, remind you every hour okay, so we come in i try to give him free time in the house and he'll find a spot and pee on the carpet so for this reason i have been taking away his free time and just when i think let me try again he'll go again just the other day for the first time he pee on the hard wood floors! so i wake up at 1am 3am to take him out in the yard so when i get up at 6am theres a huge mess waiting for me, i am a housewife so i am able to be with him at home to take him out everyhour but it's takeing over my life, i go to the store i stress out cuz i need to be back within the hour to put him out, i want him lose but i end up getting more than playtime, i hate starting my moring off with that big mess of poop and pee i don't know what to do
he has a crate and he uses it in there as well after he comes inside

~I have 2, 11 week old shi pups here. And I am out every hour with them. They will piddle 2 or 3 times and than we let them come back in for about an hour. I spend about 15 min out there with them. If no piddle back they go in their pen, and I try again in about a 1/2 hour. But they do piddle 2-3 times in that 15 min. As for waking up to a mess, are you letting them eat in the evening and have a b.m. before bed? our guys eat dinner about 4 in the afternoon and poo around 6. They get no more food until the next am at 6 am.

FYI shi's can be very stubborn about house breaking, they will try just about everything to avoid what you want lol. But once they get the fact there is no way around it you're set.

Shih Tzu/Pomeranian (Shiranian)

Monday, August 18th, 2008

Does anyone know about this Hybrid of dog? I have been searching shelters and breeders far and wide for a little lap dog and I found a lady who is giving a litter away to good homes for free because they are “mongrels”. She said I would also have to take care of vaccines and worming myself so I was also wondering if it will be bad for the puppies health not to receive these vital vaccines before they are wean and ready to be adopted?

I also plan on spay or neutering at the appropriate age, I can afford health care for a new puppy and/or dog being that I live minutes to a vet, an SPCA clinic and have access to a vet clinic on a military base…just giving people the heads up because I noticed some people can get snobby and preachy when asked about mixed breeds.

We don't get snobby or preachy about mixed breeds, the majority of us OWN mixed breeds, some of us even own the "designer" breeds but we got them from SHELTERS and don't embrace the stupid titles. Nor do we allow for them to be called HYBRIDS, they're MUTTS.

Its the mutts that get those STUPID fancy names like Shiranian, and once more, people that PAY MONEY for those mutts at stores and from "breeders" who are nothing more than common mutt owners who want to make a quick penny.

I have a "pomshe". A mutt. A mix between a pomeranian and a sheltie. I NEVER call her a pomshe. She's a mixed breed.

If you're getting the dog for free, no problem.

Don't shoot a puppy until AFTER its been weened at eight weeks, after that, your vet can start you on a shooting schedule.

Our 9 mo. shih tzu loves to dig… in the dirt outside & inside on his bed & couch. Why & how do I stop it?

Monday, August 18th, 2008

He digs in lots of things but needs to be washed every time it rains and (he sticks his nose in which is really a mess). I also catch him eating his poop sometimes. He is in a fenced yard so he runs free.

This is pretty normal behaviour for a Shih Tzu. You will just need to accept the fact that diggy bathing is a nearly everyday outine.
