Free Shih Tzu

I have a Shih Tzu Pomeranian mix and he is great. He is 10 months old and very fiesty but loving and snuggly.?

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

this is in response to the question about the lady giving free puppies away…mine is great. He goes non-stop about 1/2 the day but the other 1/2 he is very snuggly… he is very intelligent and friendly.
I don't know where you get off being so high and mighty – I am not "throwing him out" I was letting the person who had ask if they should get one how wonderful they were. I love mine so much that he has a GPS tracking collar and has already been on 2 vacations with me and getting room service at the hotel for that matter. Next time you respond like you did to this you might make sure you know what you are talking about.

If he’s so great, why are you tossing him out like yesterday’s trash?

Where can I buy a Shih-Tzu puppy if I’m in Qatar?

Saturday, November 8th, 2008

Just now, I saw a youtube video about this VERY VERY gorgeous, cute, little puppy. It was a Shih-Tzu, and I want it so bad! I tried looking at eBay but the shipping fee was too high and I can’t afford it with my little allowance. So if you happen to know where I could buy a Shih-Tzu with FREE shipping fee, please tell me :D ..

BTW, If you also happen to have a Shih-Tzu.. wanna tell me how it acts towards its owner? =P

They don't sell live animals on Ebay.

If you can't afford the shipping then how can you afford the puppy? What about food, vet bills, toys, bedding, etc. It costs money to have a dog.

Another big expense is the grooming. You have to take it in to be groomed or buy the grooming tools and do it yourself.

My shih tzu is coming 8 mths old and is being very picky with his food. Can anyone help pls?

I know that this qn has been asked countless of times but I hope you guys can help me. I feed my dog Royal Canin for puppies (dry) and I feed him twice a day. Morning and night. He never had any problems with eating and will literally gulp his food in minutes. But abt a mth ago, he suddenly decided that he doesn’t want to eat. I do not free feed him. At first I tried removing his food after 15 min if he refuses to touch it. I did that for his breakfast. Come dinner time he still refused to eat. I was told that it’s ok if dogs suddenly decide to fast. So I removed his dinner too. Same thing happened the following day. After that he will reluctantly pick his food but still practically leave a full bowl behind. I tried softening the food. He ate enthusiastically for 1 day then decided to quit eating again. Current status is that he will only eat 1 meal, at dinner time. Even then he sometimes will not finish. I’m at my wits end cos this has been going on for a mth. I don’t really want to free feed him. And have bought a new brand of food, Wellness to try on him. I’m mixing it with the Royal Canin food but still no avail. He is basically still energetic but he has noticeably lost weight. Any suggestions from anyone??

First – get him to a vet and make sure he’s ok. After a month it’s possible he’s ill or has parasites.

Second – if he’s gone off his feed, it’s a good thing you bought a different one. Now while it’s normally best to slowly make the change, since he’s refusing the RC, you might want to just give him the straight Wellness and see what happens. Mixing food he’s refusing with a new food could cause him to reject the new food as well.
Definitely make sure he has access to fresh water daily – if he’s not feeling well, he might drink more water than eat, which is good so he won’t be dehydrated.
Not all animals are the same. Some need to be free fed as they are grazers and not inclined to eat 2 “big” meals a day when they can just grab a bite here and there throughout the day. I have 2 like this – they simply will not eat “in bulk”. They are still only fed a certain amount per day, but it’s left out for them to eat at their leisure.
As for a potty schedule, if you’re gone part of the day, keeping a potty pad under a newspaper in an area that it’s ok for him to potty on is a good idea. I have relatives that are gone for up to 12 hours a day – they feed their dogs canned food once a day when they get home, but during the day while they are gone, they have the dogs in a safe enclosed area of the house with a bowl of kibble, a bowl of water and a potty area with piddle pads and newspaper.

Hope this helps

Blessings

shih tzu housebreaking problems?

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

Hi I have 5month old shih tzu its a male and I potty and pee pee train him on the newspaper but somethings he poops or pee in the carpet or in corners not on the newspaper I bought a dog potty trainer but still help me any good sites that are free.
And also I have his barking problems he keeps barking please help me

Thanks in Advance.

I agree. Skip the newspapers for potty training and take your dog outside. If you start with newspapers, it will make him think that it’s OK to pee and poop in the house.

I would try crate train your dog. It’s pro baby one of the quickest and easiest ways to do.

I’ll add some free links for you, since it would take too much space to copy and paste.

Good luck.

Life With The Shih Tzu Part Ii

Saturday, November 1st, 2008

In part I of this series of articles about life with the Shih Tzu I discussed the beginning steps of daily grooming of your Shih Tzu. In this article I will continue that discussion.

Once you have the hair on the tummy and legs all brushed out, flick all the body hair up and over the back before brushing it downwards again, a layer at a time, using the nylon and bristle brush. You might like to spray each layer lightly with water or a crème rinse and water mixture before brushing. You now have the Shih Tzu still lying on its side. You reason you want to work in layers like this is that you are able to brush right to the skin and remove all traces of hair that would start to mat and tangle. If the Shih Tzu is standing you can brush all day and only reach the top layer of the coat. It is really necessary to brush to the skin on a Shih Tzu. Use the comb only when it is necessary to take out a tangle you encounter.

When the first side is finished, turn the Shih Tzu over so he lies on his other side and repeat the process. If you are lucky enough to have a Shih Tzu that will relax and go to sleep this is such a blessing for the both of you. If you are gentle enough and teach the Shih Tzu that this is a time of “relaxation and pleasure” you might just have one that does sleep during brushing sessions. If you have a regular daily brushing routine you will be sure to find skin problems or parasites before they become very serious.

When you have both sides of the Shih Tzu’s coat thoroughly groomed and free of knots, stand the Shih Tzu up, facing away from you. Straighten the parting down the center of the back, using a comb or the tip of a blunt knitting-needle. Position the Shih Tzu to face you and groom the hair on the chest and neck. There is usually a knot or two behind and under the ears. Take particular care to clear these out.

What remains now to be groomed is the head and face. Use the fine-toothed end of the metal comb in this area. Be gentle around the nose, eyes and mouth. This is a good time to give the whiskers, beard and hair around the eyes an extra thorough wash to keep stain from building up. You can use a dry shampoo for this or a warm washcloth. Daily cleaning helps to keep the stain down. For more stubborn stains you will need to try other methods, of which I will discuss in latter parts of this series. Part the whiskers in the center of the top of the nose and comb down to each side to form a frame for the muzzle.

At about five months of age the hair of the head on the Shih Tzu above the nose can be tied into a topknot. This tying up of the hair keeps it out of the Shih Tzu’s eyes and food. It also gives the Shih Tzu face its distinctive appearance. Personally, I love the neat topknot of a Shih Tzu. I believe it is one of the main ingredients of making the Shih Tzu look like the breed standard calls for. A badly placed topknot can ruin the expression of the Shih Tzu. It is worth learning how to do the topknots correctly until you can get them right each time. And I say this to mean, “Do as I say, and not as I do.” I have so many Shih Tzu in my household I keep most of my cut really, really short. I have a few I can make a topknot on, but mine are not perfect at all. I need to practice this technique more than I do. It really is what helps to make the Shih Tzu look like a “real Shih Tzu.” I do love this look.

Life with the Shih Tzu will be continued in Part III of this series.

What can I do about my shih tzu scratching all the time?

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

She’s a little over a year old and has done this since she was a puppy. I use an all natural shampoo, which I bought from my groomer, to bathe her in about once every 7-10 days. I make sure I rinse her out extra well every time. I see absolutely no fleas on her. I have taken her to the vet who gave her a cortisone shot…didn’t help at all. She eats Innova, Evo dog food by Natura, which is grain-free, treats are also Innova brand. We don’t have any other pets. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do for her and what could be causing her this skin irritation?

I have a Shih Tzu that was born with the same problem. They are prone to skin problems and I know how you feel. I do find that when you give them a Oatmeal bath it helps calm the itching down alot, My vet also advised me to give him a half a tablet of Benadryl. I would okay this with your vet. Also have your doctor check for mange . Mange is a parasitic infestation of the skin. It causes hair loss and itching intense itching that can lead to infection. There are several different types of mange and all should be treated. I hope this has helped you.

My dog isn't gaining weight–how can I get her to gain?

Saturday, September 6th, 2008

I have a 25 pound chow/shih-tzu mix who eats one meal per day at around the same time (7:00pm). She is 9 years old, and I can see her backbone, but not her ribs.
Before I started to feed her at a set time, she was a free-feeder (she ate dry food whenever she wanted). So I thought that if I gave food to her at a set time, then she would eat more and therefore gain more weight. Well, that didn't work so I then decided to buy her Science Diet can food to go with her dry food for Senior dogs—she eats it but still doesn't seem to put on any weight.
Any pointers on what I can do to help her gain?

Feed her a good quality dog food.. Something with a little more fat content to it.. Forget the Science Diet, it's no good..

She is older too, what does the vet say about her weight? Remember, thin is better than fat.. People tend to think a fat dog is a healthy dog, but in reality it is very hard on hips and joints.. If she is older anyhow and might start to feel her age, I would let her stay thin.. As long as she is healthy otherwise, it's better for her to be thin.

Avoid Beneful, Pedigree, Ol Roy, Kibbles N Bits, Iams, Eukanuba, . Etc.. VERY Crappy dog foods, no nutritional value at all.. It's actually cheaper to feed a good quality food.

Also check things against the recall list and avoid foods now with wheat gluten Corn glueten, and rice protein in them.
