It will, because of my allergies and mother, most likely be a toy dog breed. I might get a Havanese or Malti-Poo or Shih-tzu, or a breed in the Bichon family. It will definitely be a puppy, and I'm going to crate train and possibly litter box train because it will be so small. So if any of you could give me a general overview on what i'll need to buy and price ranges and things like shots and what not. And also what I should look for when I find a good offer on a puppy? I have no idea what CKC and AKC registration are.
Also, I've been told that it most likely needs to be a puppy because I have a 10 year old brother who may not go too well with an older dog.
I budget a $1000 a year for each of my dogs for vet care, liscense, feed etc. I never have funds left over . There is usually at least one unplanned vet expense. One emergency alone can easily cost well over $1000. Do more research about what bred will suit your lifestyle best.
Akc Shih Tzu
I'm getting a new puppy, but I'm not sure of how much it will cost to care for it overall.?
Monday, August 18th, 2008Do you think people should get a paper to be able to breed their dogs?
Monday, August 18th, 2008i do. i mean some people breed their dogs and have no idea what they are doing. like people keep breeding overpopulated dogs just for money like pitbulls, labs, ect. those breeds i just listed are all great dogs and are just as good as any other but like the dog population is way to big people who breed small dogs usually can find a home. so do you think that the ckc ,akc , other clubs check the people out before they breed and could this hep stop puppymills. idk i am 13 but i thinks this would help you can just look on the internet people are selling a chihuahua or a shih-tzu and spell it chiwawa and shitzu wow this makes me so angry they wanna breed and dont even know how to spell a word when we pick out a new dog we do tons of research and stuff and know how to spell the breeds name. idk but tell me wat u think? also sorry for missspelled words.
Erinn, I totally agree with you that I wish breeding could be more limited, both because of the overpopulation – - which i have long seen the results as a shelter volunteer – -and the ignorant breeding of dogs of poor health and temperament (whether intentional by BYBs and puppy mills or by ignorant people not spaying and neutering and letting their dogs run loose and mate randomly)
I don't think that AKC or anyone ought to be setting numbers for how many total labs could be bred (and probably that is not what you meant) , but I wish SOME authority could set quality standards which would have to be met to determine which dogs should be bred. Setting a bar for quality would necessarily limit quantity since most dogs would not reach that standard.
They should not just have to have the kind of registration paper you get from AKC which only says that the parents were of the same breed – - I hear people who think that the fact their dog has "papers" means they SHOULD breed it , when really that is just a pre-requisite in determining breeding, not the final criterion – -and the papers may not even really be true since dishonest breeders can cheat and lie about who are the parents of a litter when they fill out the form.
Personally I really think there should be breed wardens like the major German dog clubs. Dogs should have to be examined and judged based on health testing, how well they conform to the breed standard for appearance and temperament, and if they are a working breed how well they can perform. (In other words not just a beauty contest but how good they are at herding hunting, tracking, protection, obedience, etc.)
They should then only be allowed to be bred if they are judged "fit for breeding" for those that are adequate and don't have disqualifying faults, or "recommended for breeding" for ones that are superior and have qualities it really is recommended should be passed on to improve the breed.
<sigh> It would be very hard to enforce though. Especially in a country like USA with such a strong feeling of individualism – -that can be great in some things, but in something like this you get people saying "i have a right to do anything I want with my dogs. It is my right to breed my un-healthy "chiwawa" and my bad tempered "teacup" "shitzu" and make little "chiwatzus" or whatever new stupid name they come up with.
But I absolutely think puppy mills should be stopped immediately, many of them ought to be closed down on the basis of cruelty and neglect. we should concentrate on making sure officials enforce the laws that exist, as well as on making stricter laws about conditions for all dogs and about transporting large numbers of dogs and puppies.
Good for you for being concerned and putting a lot of thought into this important subject. You sound like a pretty smart and caring 13 year old.
What paperwork should I ask for when buying a new puppy?
Monday, August 18th, 2008I am about to buy a shih tzu puppy. This is my first time buying a puppy and would like to know what i should ask for in the way of paperwork. I want the dog to be purebred and have all the shots/worming etc. I have heard some people say AKC or other registered but is that enough to show the dog is purebred or do i need some other paper work to show he is. I may want to start breeding them down the road and don't want to run into complications with not having proof they are indeed purebred. Also, is there other paperwork i need to get if i intend to breed them in the future?
PAPERWORK:
You should get the puppy's AKC registration papers. AKC registration shows the puppy is purebred, a puppy can only be registered if it's parents were both AKC registered and of the same breed. (Although you will make sure you are dealing with a reputable breeder. There have been instances of unethical breeders falsifying the papers with incorrect information.) Many breeders will also give you copies of the sire's and dam's pedigrees.
You should also get the puppy's shot records to-date.
A good breeder will also go above and beyond the minimum. For example, my dog's breeder knew I was interested in agility, so she printed out tons of information about agility for me. She also had information such as tips & tricks, what the puppy's schedule was (what food & how often), etc..
If you are dealing with a reputable breeder, there is also a contract that you will get a copy of and the breeder will get a copy of. Both of your signatures will be on it. It states things like if the dog must be altered, what to do if you no longer want the dog, health guarantees, etc..
===
BREEDING:
You likely won't even have the opportunity to breed this dog. Reputable breeders have a contract that all dogs sold as pets must be spayed/neutered. Only the show-prospect dogs will be placed intact. (And sometimes, a show-prospect quality dog gets placed as a pet. So that dog will be sold with a spay/neuter contract as well.)
But as far as breeding goes, here is some information:
Here's an easy way to evaluate if you should ever CONSIDER breeding your dogs: http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c219/skatekitten2288/Petneuter.jpg
There is a lot more to breeding than just sticking two dogs together. The following website is great (although some of the links are broken, the information that is there is very good).
http://www.learntobreed.com/
Also, a few more questions (there are many many more, this is just the tip of the iceberg!):
- Is/are the dog(s) AKC or UKC registered [or your country's equivalent] ? (Not Contenential Kennel Club, APRI, or any other of those non-legit/non-reputable/scam registries)
- What is the dog(s) pedigree like?
- Are you planning on showing the dog(s) in confirmation to prove that they is a breeding quality specimen?
- Have you had any breeding experience or have you found someone that is a reputable breeder to be your mentor with this?
- Are you willing to keep all the puppies if suitable homes cannot be found? If you find homes and the new owners at some point cannot care for the dog, are you willing to take it back?
- Do you realize how much it will cost? If you do things right, even if you sell the puppies for $1000 each, you will likely still be "in the hole".
Here's a good place to start (yes, the same link for above, it's a good website):
http://www.learntobreed.com/
(Some of the links are broken, but what is there is good information.)
Also, learn everything you can about your breed. You should know the breed standard inside and out.
If you are serious about dog breeding, start showing in confirmation and join the breed club. You will learn a lot, and also be able to find a mentor or multiple mentors that will help you and guide you through choosing which dogs to breed, etc. It takes a long time to become a good, responsible, reputable breeder. It will likely be years before you have your first litter of puppies.
Pet naming trouble?
Monday, August 18th, 2008Okay so im getting a nother puppy on Saturday. He is a shih tzu and is tiny. He is white and black. Do you guys have any ideas on what i should name him? He has to have 4 names bcause he is AKC registered. I liked the names:
Armani
Duke
Kennedy
Abercrombie
Triston
Aiden (but thats going to be my kids name when i have a baby)
Caden
If you guys don't have any idea, can you give me some sites to look some names up? Thanx a bunch!
For me personally; I always prefer "tough" names for little dogs. Like Diesel, Harley, Draco, etc.
Here are a couple of websites that have male puppy names.

http://www.top-dogs-names.com/Male-Dog-Names-ab.html
http://www.dog-names-and-more.com/male-dog-names.html
If it helps any; the names of my two little male dogs are Ty (short for Typhon) and Sirius.
Good luck; I hope this helps!

can you show a dog for fun?
Monday, August 18th, 2008i have a 17 month old male shih tzu he is not in anyway registered with akc so that is out of the question he is neutered as well my question is where do i find a place to show my dog for fun just for fun i have other dogs in my home and if anyone knows of a place where i can show a mixed breed dog again just for fun although there might be no such thing i would really appreciate it but it doesnt hurt to ask i live in tampa,fl so anywhere near tampa is fine. or if anyone has any links to websites or anything with information like that.also places where they do events for dogs besides taking them to the doggie beach and dog park please let me know i would like to take them out and possibly meet other people that has a shih tzu or a mixed breed dog or anything like that.thank you in advance.
Yes, sure. Find your local Mixed Breed Dog Club. Mixed breeds and unregistered dogs can also compete in obedience (including rally obedience) and agility. Here's a sample club's website:
http://www.members.tripod.com/mbdca/mbdc_california.htm
If you just want to do obedience and agility with an unregistered purebred, you can get an ILP number from the AKC and compete that way.
Easiest Way To Prevent Mats?
Monday, August 18th, 2008I have a 10 month old Shih Tzu.
Now, I'd love to grow her hair out the way a Shih Tzu's hair is supposed to be (AKC standards, I'd love to show her later on)
It's about 3 inches long, now. I brush her every single day, at least 3 times. I also take her to the groomers every two months to get everything done that needs to be done.
Every other day, I seem to find these dime sized mats all along her back legs, and some on her hips! So bad, I have to cut them out! The groomers find this, too sometimes!
Since I want to show her, her hair will never get the proper length!
How can I prevent mats any better than this?
Jordie, isn't Mane N Tail a horse shampoo/conditioner? Is that okay for her?
Thanks, so much everyone! It was also nice to hear from a pro dog groomer!
Shih Tzu hair is so difficult! Gahh!
Thanks, though! I will buy some good shampoo (mane n tail), and bathe her a lot more than 2 months!
Also, I never thought of snipping at the mat to make it easier to come out! Thanks for that tip!!
Continue brushing her everyday. But bathe her once a month rather than every 2 months. She will be easier to brush out if she's cleaner. Be sure to use a Slicker brush and comb. When brushing her out. Section out the dog by first brushing out her back leg first inside and out and comb check. Making sure there are no matts with the comb. Then move to her tummy area. Get that area completely brushed and combed out. Then move onto her front leg and armpit. Then the front of the dog moving all the way around to the back leg. Then brush and comb the tail, then brush and comb out the face. This is how i thoroughly brush and comb out a dog properly. Rather than jumping all around the dog and not remembering what I've brushed and haven't. If she gets the pin matts you could try taking thinning shears and cut the matts with thinning shears. But only snip the matt once or twice to loosen the matt, then brush repeating the process until the matt falls out in the brush. Don't worry the thinning shears will not leave chop marks. It will blend into the hair and won't be able to tell that the matts were blended or cut out.
Can I sue the Groomer?
Monday, August 18th, 2008I do not now what to do! My Shih-tzu . She went to the groomer and I ended up at the vet and he told me that:the groomer had cut her tummy and left all kinds of hair in her eyes. What can I do about the groomer. The Vet said he pulled all kinds of hair out of her eyes, and had to sow up her tummy, the blade cut her. I have always used this groomer on my toy poodles and never happen. Can I sue the groomer? The Groomer did not offer any kind of comtrack before she started grooming, Infact She did not even tell me anything about my pup being hurt. I was taking my pup out and looked down and seen blood! She closed behind me and when i seen the blood I tured to go back inside she would not let me in. This is form the akc club refences, they told me that this groomer was the best in my town.
I forgot to say that, I have tried all day to get back intouch with them, just to find out what happen.I time I got hold of her husband, and he said " WE did not do that It was done already" The sad thing is I took photos before I took her, becouse it was only her 2ed time at the groomers! and it was her 1st full groom. VET said she has had 5 dogs come up there with aobut the same thing wrong from that groomer. THE VET has put up a sign that expains everthing that has happen so hoppfully no one has to go though that again. My mom told me to call the ASPCA Wonder if they could do anything. I just do not want them to be inbuisness any more, I though I could get a judge to shut them down that is why I was thanking about sueing. Becouse it was not the $78.95 it was the fact that she got hurt and some other little pup could get hurt!
Thank you all for all the input. Suzanna lynn is in the vets, she lost a lot of blood and she only weights 3 pounds anyways. so they are giveing her blood.
I tried to call they will not talk to me, This groomer was my friend, we just had a BQ I have been going to her for 8 years. We have never had a problem. I have been to her house and she would not come to the door, infact she sent he 11 yr old son out and told me that I was a b**ch and She wished I was died. I have never said a cross word to her. We go to the same church. I knew she was having personal problems, but she said it was her Son at work.
I can not bleive this. I am so upset i can not even type. I am so sorry for this.
SUE SUE SUE SUE SUE, You should SUE there pants off!! I would never go back there. Also you need to in form the AKC Club that did that and tell them about what happen.
Hope your Shih-tzu gets better.
Why won't our dog go into heat?
Sunday, August 17th, 2008We have a Shih-Tzu with amazing blood lines and AKC registration that we planned to breed. However, she is almost a year old and has not come into heat yet. I know we can't breed her on her first cycle regardless, but is it possible that she will never come in heat?
I'm confused- why do I need to show my dog and get her to championships to prove she's a good pet? Her grandfather several generations back was the first Shih-Tzu to win the Westminster. But we are breeding for pets, not for future dog show winners…
I'm sorry- I guess I understand with the way I opened my question and misled what I meant about our breeding intentions.
Some dogs don't go in to season until after a year.
However, just because she has a great pedigree it does not mean she is a good example of the breed. She can be a litter sister to the top Shih Tzu of all time and still not have good breed type.
If she is that good of an example, take her out and show her. Get her CH, do the health testing and then look for an equally good stud dog after she is two.
Edited to add: The reason you finish (get a championship) on your dog before you breed it is because it shows you are dedicated to keeping the breed in conformation to the standard. You can take two Best in Show winners and breed them and get a whole litter of dogs who are not capable of finishing, and therefore not good examples of breed type.
Shih tzus should look and move and have the proper coat and temperament for the breed. Personality is only a tiny fraction of what can possibly be passed on to offspring and it should not be the sole factor in breeding any animal.
"Breeding pets" is breeding for money and is frowned upon (rightfully so). Read below.
5 things to consider or do before thinking about breeding your first litter!
#1) Do you have the emotional/financial/physical ability to care for every puppy for it's lifetime in the event you can't sell them or they come back? Before you even consider breeding a litter, you should have at least a few homes lined up. And friends and family who say they'd love a puppy from FiFi almost always find an excuse not to when the time comes. You should also be willing to put some effort into Rescue, and not only of your own progeny. Time, money, referalls, they all are just as important as actually physically rescuing and/or fostering dogs. If you are prepared to bring dogs into the world, you should be willing to help the needy dogs as well.
#2) Does your dog have something to contribute to the breed? Some outstanding attribute that is lacking in the breed overall? Liking the dog's personality isn't enough, as I have almost NEVER had a puppy with the same personality of it's mother. Do you understand the standard enough to know what ARE faults and attributes? This can only be gained by time, experience and exposure. Your initial opinion will usually be that your beloved dog is perfect. We all thought that. As time goes by, you learn that your dog is not perfect, and you gain a better understanding of the breed and what it should be.
#3) Do you have enough knowledge of genetics to understand modes of inheritance? Have you spent the time studying pedigrees and understanding which dogs are producing what? Are you cognizant of the attributes they produce as well as the faults? Is the winning record of the potential stud dog and/or it's puppies your deciding factor? (if so, that's the wrong answer!!) Are you aware of the health problems in the breed, and how to test for them, how to at least try to avoid them, how they are inherited? If not, do you have a mentor in the breed, someone who DOES have the knowledge required?
#4) Do you have a thick skin? If your puppies are continually very successful, people will take every opportunity to discredit you. You will hear rumors about the health, temperament of your dogs, and that you sleep with judges. If your ego is tied up in your dogs, DO NOT breed!!!
#5) Are you prepared emotionally and physically in the event that you have to drop an entire line and start all over again? Sometimes you find that your line is producing something nasty, or simply not going where you wanted it to go, and the only solution is to start all over. That can be devastating. Sometimes the dogs you discontinue using may have thousands invested into them. If you breed him/her to 'get your investment back' you are breeding for the wrong reasons.
I'd also add, is producing ONE puppy worth the loss of your beloved pet?
What about 5 puppies?
Your pet can die giving birth. She can die from pyometra.

Good luck and I hope you make the best decision for you and your girl.
AKC papers?
Sunday, August 17th, 2008We have a purebred Shih Tzu, we got her from a really good breeder, she raised and trained and showed the one male and one female that she has, so she only breeds them every now and then, this was her last litter, she is spayed now. anyways, she gave us a folder filled with papers, how do i know which ones are the AKC registery??
like can you send links of what papers actually look like?
thank you!
sorry, she went over it all with my mom, i was too preoccupied with the puppy. XD
my mom forgot, and her registered name i guess for now is Bella. thats it just bella. she told my mom that we could change it, she had to put some name on the papers. there was alot more to the name, but i know it has something to do with bella. her name is now Cloe, so that name was just temporary.
The AKC papers will plainly say AKC right on the top of them. It's not going to be hard to see which ones they are. Maybe she didn't give you the papers?? You should be able to tell without any problem at all..
