I have a family that wants to buy one of my puppies for half of their listed price. They say he will be a family pet, have a loving home and fixed. He is a AKC Shih-Tzu. Please help me, what would you do? thanks:)
I do want him to go to a home. I am just a little worried. They say they don't have alot of money & want it for a x-mas gift for thier kid. I have not meet them & they have only seen photos of him.
Do you believe them? Do you get a good feeling from them? Are they willing to let you check out their home and do they have a vet reference they can give you?
I will sometimes consider reducing a price if it means a great home. You should check these people out though, as you should any buyers. But particularly these guys because it wouldn't be unheard of for someone to make such an offer, then turn around and sell the pup for a profit.
If it's a family though, the chances are good they're just looking for a good price on a family pet.
You can offer to sell the pup on limited registration and spay contract for half the price. If they want it reversed to full, they can pay you the balance after they've had the health checks done.
Akc Shih Tzu
Breeders, please help me decide?
Monday, November 24th, 2008What should I do, my dog may be pregnant?
Sunday, November 2nd, 2008I know that it is all my fault! My female Shih Tzu was left unattended in my house while my male was wandering around too!!!
What should I do?
They are both AKC registered with a long line of champions. I had their hips checked within the past 6 months and they both were rated excellent.
Should I call my breed mentor?
Should I check with everyone on my waiting list?
Should I prep my whelping box and update my whelping supplies?
Oh, what to do, what to do?????
Ummm….ebsmrtgrl, Shih Tzu pups DON'T have knee problems, they have to potential for Hip Dysplasia. That is why their hips need to be checked.
HUMM! Is this the one who starts fires or the one who has a chain saw fetish??? Or the one who is fashion challenged???
Did you see them get it on or are you just guessing???? Well you can just wait it out and see if her nipples get bigger in the next ohhh 3 to 4 weeks and then she might be or it could be a false pregnancy too. You know those Shih Tzu’s they can be very sneaky about these kinds of thing. Vain little rascals.
You know cause of their top knots being too tight!
I think you should wait it out and then you’ll know when she starts to pop out pups!
Hey you can get stuff ready but you know that all you need is to sit back and watch! She can do it all her self. Oh if a pup comes out feet first give them a bit of a pull that will get the pup out too.
Hope this helps!
buying from breeder?
Friday, October 24th, 2008I am thinking about buying a shih tzu puppy from this lady. I went there two days ago to meet the puppies, There were 3 of them. I met both parents and they both won a best in show before and have health papers (checking hips etc..). They are AKC registered. She showed me their AKC papers for each puppy (and vet check papers) and i would have to sign a paper that says i have to spay/nuerter the puppy (which i think is stupid). She said i cannot take a puppy home until they are 11 weeks (which is next week) (i think this is extremely stupid) isn't it suppose to be 6-7 weeks? Her home is very nice and the dogs seem in good health but i think the spay/nueter contract and not taking the puppy home until 11 weeks is stupid (because 1. What if i want to breed since there parents got best in show? 2. The puppy probably will bond to her instead of me right?)
She is changing $750.00 for both the males and females. Is this too much?
First – this sounds like a really reputable breeder and nothing she's doing is stupid!
Only backyard breeders ever let their puppies go at 6 – 7 weeks because that's way too young for a puppy to be separated from their mom and litter mates. This breeder is doing everything correctly.
Also putting spay/neuter contracts on her puppies is the responsible thing to do. You're obviously buying a pet quality puppy and pet puppies are always put on contracts to prevent people from breeding them. Only the very best in any breed are to be used for breeding – just because the parents won best in shows doesn't mean every puppy they produce is show quality.
And an 11 weeks old puppy will bond with you. An adult dog that you buy or adopt will bond with the new owner, so will a puppy.
Can someone help me name my puppy for AKC registration?
Monday, October 13th, 2008I finally got my Shih Tzu puppy, we named her Willow.
I want to encorporate “Hollywood” into her official name as it is part of her mother’s name (Hollywood Silvermist).
I would like to have something that sounds neat & different but would like to see if someone can come up with a few more ideas.
Mystifying Hollywood Silver Girl.
Misting Hollywood
Starring Hollywood Skies
Glistening Hollywood Stars
Misting Starry Hollywood Skies
Mistifying Hollywood Willow Girl
Willowing Hollywood Silver
Hollywood Willow Tree Nights
Willowwood Silver Girl
?Chuckles?
Should I buy from a breeder with dogs that are ACA but not AKC registered?
Thursday, September 25th, 2008My family has found a breeder who sells shih tzu that are ACA but not AKC registered. The dogs quite a bit cheaper than the ones from other breeders. All the mommies and daddies of the breeder are AKC registered just not the babies. So is this breeder a safe breeder to be buying from?
This breeder is lying scum who bought dogs that had limited registrations with AKC (meaning they shouldn’t be bred) and decided to breed them anyhow. OR he is scum that AKC has disallowed from registering any further litters.
Either option is BAD.
I wouldn’t touch this sort of breeder with a 10 foot pole!

Generally when a breeder has AKC registered dams and sires and do not register the pups (meaning the litter as you are responsible to register the pup when purchased in most cases) this means that the dam has exceeded the number of litters the AKC will permit her to have. Once the litter number has been met, the litter as well as pups cannot be registered. In addition, if an AKC registered breeder does this they can be held accountable and banned from the AKC for many years.
What’s with people not putting commas, periods, and punctuations in their paragraphs?
Monday, September 8th, 2008i have a 17 month old male shih tzu he is not in anyway registered with akc so that is out of the question he is neutered as well my question is where do i find a place to show my dog for fun just for fun i have other dogs in my home and if anyone knows of a place where i can show a mixed breed dog again just for fun although there might be no such thing i would really appreciate it but it doesnt hurt to ask i live in tampa,fl so anywhere near tampa is fine. or if anyone has any links to websites or anything with information like that.also places where they do events for dogs besides taking them to the doggie beach and dog park please let me know i would like to take them out and possibly meet other people that has a shih tzu or a mixed breed dog or anything like that.thank you in advance.
WTF DOES THAT READ?
How is that any different than using abbreviations instead of writing complete words? WTF LOL, etc!

Do you think people should get a paper to be able to breed their dogs?
Monday, August 18th, 2008i do. i mean some people breed their dogs and have no idea what they are doing. like people keep breeding overpopulated dogs just for money like pitbulls, labs, ect. those breeds i just listed are all great dogs and are just as good as any other but like the dog population is way to big people who breed small dogs usually can find a home. so do you think that the ckc ,akc , other clubs check the people out before they breed and could this hep stop puppymills. idk i am 13 but i thinks this would help you can just look on the internet people are selling a chihuahua or a shih-tzu and spell it chiwawa and shitzu wow this makes me so angry they wanna breed and dont even know how to spell a word when we pick out a new dog we do tons of research and stuff and know how to spell the breeds name. idk but tell me wat u think? also sorry for missspelled words.
Erinn, I totally agree with you that I wish breeding could be more limited, both because of the overpopulation – - which i have long seen the results as a shelter volunteer – -and the ignorant breeding of dogs of poor health and temperament (whether intentional by BYBs and puppy mills or by ignorant people not spaying and neutering and letting their dogs run loose and mate randomly)
I don't think that AKC or anyone ought to be setting numbers for how many total labs could be bred (and probably that is not what you meant) , but I wish SOME authority could set quality standards which would have to be met to determine which dogs should be bred. Setting a bar for quality would necessarily limit quantity since most dogs would not reach that standard.
They should not just have to have the kind of registration paper you get from AKC which only says that the parents were of the same breed – - I hear people who think that the fact their dog has "papers" means they SHOULD breed it , when really that is just a pre-requisite in determining breeding, not the final criterion – -and the papers may not even really be true since dishonest breeders can cheat and lie about who are the parents of a litter when they fill out the form.
Personally I really think there should be breed wardens like the major German dog clubs. Dogs should have to be examined and judged based on health testing, how well they conform to the breed standard for appearance and temperament, and if they are a working breed how well they can perform. (In other words not just a beauty contest but how good they are at herding hunting, tracking, protection, obedience, etc.)
They should then only be allowed to be bred if they are judged "fit for breeding" for those that are adequate and don't have disqualifying faults, or "recommended for breeding" for ones that are superior and have qualities it really is recommended should be passed on to improve the breed.
<sigh> It would be very hard to enforce though. Especially in a country like USA with such a strong feeling of individualism – -that can be great in some things, but in something like this you get people saying "i have a right to do anything I want with my dogs. It is my right to breed my un-healthy "chiwawa" and my bad tempered "teacup" "shitzu" and make little "chiwatzus" or whatever new stupid name they come up with.
But I absolutely think puppy mills should be stopped immediately, many of them ought to be closed down on the basis of cruelty and neglect. we should concentrate on making sure officials enforce the laws that exist, as well as on making stricter laws about conditions for all dogs and about transporting large numbers of dogs and puppies.
Good for you for being concerned and putting a lot of thought into this important subject. You sound like a pretty smart and caring 13 year old.
What paperwork should I ask for when buying a new puppy?
Monday, August 18th, 2008I am about to buy a shih tzu puppy. This is my first time buying a puppy and would like to know what i should ask for in the way of paperwork. I want the dog to be purebred and have all the shots/worming etc. I have heard some people say AKC or other registered but is that enough to show the dog is purebred or do i need some other paper work to show he is. I may want to start breeding them down the road and don't want to run into complications with not having proof they are indeed purebred. Also, is there other paperwork i need to get if i intend to breed them in the future?
PAPERWORK:
You should get the puppy's AKC registration papers. AKC registration shows the puppy is purebred, a puppy can only be registered if it's parents were both AKC registered and of the same breed. (Although you will make sure you are dealing with a reputable breeder. There have been instances of unethical breeders falsifying the papers with incorrect information.) Many breeders will also give you copies of the sire's and dam's pedigrees.
You should also get the puppy's shot records to-date.
A good breeder will also go above and beyond the minimum. For example, my dog's breeder knew I was interested in agility, so she printed out tons of information about agility for me. She also had information such as tips & tricks, what the puppy's schedule was (what food & how often), etc..
If you are dealing with a reputable breeder, there is also a contract that you will get a copy of and the breeder will get a copy of. Both of your signatures will be on it. It states things like if the dog must be altered, what to do if you no longer want the dog, health guarantees, etc..
===
BREEDING:
You likely won't even have the opportunity to breed this dog. Reputable breeders have a contract that all dogs sold as pets must be spayed/neutered. Only the show-prospect dogs will be placed intact. (And sometimes, a show-prospect quality dog gets placed as a pet. So that dog will be sold with a spay/neuter contract as well.)
But as far as breeding goes, here is some information:
Here's an easy way to evaluate if you should ever CONSIDER breeding your dogs: http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c219/skatekitten2288/Petneuter.jpg
There is a lot more to breeding than just sticking two dogs together. The following website is great (although some of the links are broken, the information that is there is very good).
http://www.learntobreed.com/
Also, a few more questions (there are many many more, this is just the tip of the iceberg!):
- Is/are the dog(s) AKC or UKC registered [or your country's equivalent] ? (Not Contenential Kennel Club, APRI, or any other of those non-legit/non-reputable/scam registries)
- What is the dog(s) pedigree like?
- Are you planning on showing the dog(s) in confirmation to prove that they is a breeding quality specimen?
- Have you had any breeding experience or have you found someone that is a reputable breeder to be your mentor with this?
- Are you willing to keep all the puppies if suitable homes cannot be found? If you find homes and the new owners at some point cannot care for the dog, are you willing to take it back?
- Do you realize how much it will cost? If you do things right, even if you sell the puppies for $1000 each, you will likely still be "in the hole".
Here's a good place to start (yes, the same link for above, it's a good website):
http://www.learntobreed.com/
(Some of the links are broken, but what is there is good information.)
Also, learn everything you can about your breed. You should know the breed standard inside and out.
If you are serious about dog breeding, start showing in confirmation and join the breed club. You will learn a lot, and also be able to find a mentor or multiple mentors that will help you and guide you through choosing which dogs to breed, etc. It takes a long time to become a good, responsible, reputable breeder. It will likely be years before you have your first litter of puppies.
