What should I do, my dog may be pregnant?

I know that it is all my fault! My female Shih Tzu was left unattended in my house while my male was wandering around too!!!

What should I do?

They are both AKC registered with a long line of champions. I had their hips checked within the past 6 months and they both were rated excellent.

Should I call my breed mentor?

Should I check with everyone on my waiting list?

Should I prep my whelping box and update my whelping supplies?

Oh, what to do, what to do?????
Ummm….ebsmrtgrl, Shih Tzu pups DON'T have knee problems, they have to potential for Hip Dysplasia. That is why their hips need to be checked.

HUMM! Is this the one who starts fires or the one who has a chain saw fetish??? Or the one who is fashion challenged???

Did you see them get it on or are you just guessing???? Well you can just wait it out and see if her nipples get bigger in the next ohhh 3 to 4 weeks and then she might be or it could be a false pregnancy too. You know those Shih Tzu’s they can be very sneaky about these kinds of thing. Vain little rascals. :) You know cause of their top knots being too tight!

I think you should wait it out and then you’ll know when she starts to pop out pups!
Hey you can get stuff ready but you know that all you need is to sit back and watch! She can do it all her self. Oh if a pup comes out feet first give them a bit of a pull that will get the pup out too.

Hope this helps! :)

hopefully the female is old enough…besides that there is not much to do if you were already planning to bred them

Go to the vet and confirm if she is pregnant, if so, get ready for puppies

I would say call your mentor. They will have better advice than you will get on Y!A.

BTW, it's great that you had them tested and that they come from a long line of champions, but little dogs usually get their knees tested, not their hips and the dogs should themselves be championed (or at the very least one of them should be).

Edit: Sorry, going on general knowledge of small breeds, for whom luxating patellas is a more common affliction than hip dysplasia. Thank you for the correction.

    You don’t know anything yet.

First, make an appointment with your vet in a reasonable amount of time to see if she has been bred.

If she has indeed been bred, retest them for the certifications to ensure everything and have it all UTD. Call your mentor (of course) for instructions.

If you have an active waiting list, inform them of an unpredicted litter between x__ sire and x__ dam.

Prep the box, and birth away.

What should you do? Take the female and the male, to the vet’s. Have her aborted and have him neutered. You are another BYB. AKC papers mean nothing if your dogs haven’t done anything to prove themselves. Why, oh why, are you bringing more pups into this world. Don’t you realize how many millions of dogs are put to sleep, each year, because of
    BYB’s like yourself?

First question is was your female in heat or was there any indication of her being in heat? How old is she? I am assuming you were intending to breed her in the future. A vet will not be able to tell for at least a month (with ultrasound) or a month and a half (with xrays) if your dog is pregnant. If this has happened in the last few days and you are not sure if your female is in heat then your vet may be able to do a vaginal swab to see if she is in heat. If she is not in heat then she was not bred. If she was in heat then assume she has been bred and I would strongly recommend xrays at 45 days for an accurate puppy count so that you know what to expect.

Shih Tzu have many health problems and patella problems are very common in toy breeds and can be OFA checked as can hips. A vet’s say so is not good enough plus there are several other problems esp eyes that need to be OFA’d certified or you can be sued. While some breeders do OFA hips, elbows and patellas few do renal dysplasia.
